Smallwood sails at Tennessee SX By Barbara ScLoren Williams 44 GRAY, TN, JUNE 20 James Smallwood traveled from the coal fields of Beckley, West Virginia, to hit paydirt at the AMA Tennessee Supercross Series. The Suzuki-mounted youngster easily handled the Schoolboy competition, racking up wins in both the qualifier an.d the main. Screaming into the slick first turn at the head of the 125cc C pack, Smallwood's machine slid out and dumped him onto the red clay. Scott Carter inherited the lead, while Smallwood remounted at the very rear of the field. Smallwood has made limited race appearances this year, but is determined to make each race count, so he began his determined journeY back to the fronL By the last turn of lap two, Smallwood moved around Carla Nelson into fourth, challenging Jeff Hensley for third. As lap three began to unwind, second place Robert Butterworth crashed going into a turn. Hensley had nowhere to go, and stopped to avoid running over Butterworth, which allowed Smallwood to slip past into second and set his sights on Carter~ Recovering quickly, Hensley closed the gap and made it a three-man battle for the lead, but Smallwood was too hot to handle and soon moved around Carter. Once in front, Smallwood kept his position to the finish. Results 50: I. Jacob Saylor (Vam). 65 7·11: l. Ross Hughes (Kaw); 2. Mall Blevins (Kaw); 3. JalX>b Saylor. JR MINI: I. Robert Jones (Kaw). The facility was in excellent condition thanks to careful preparation and relatively mild weather conditions, and about 300 entries showed up to enjoy it. Chad Winecke motored to the front in the first 250cc A moLO, with Todd Lentz settling into second. Pospisil started midpack but was up to fourth by the end of lap two. It took hIm several laps to find a way by Lentz and by that time Winecke was out of reach. Winecke blazed into the lead in the second moto, with Pospisil giving pursuit. Mike Luoma and Mike Thompson ran third and fourth in the early going. Pospisil tailed for four laps before getting by Winecke and then held him off to take the win. . Rob Engstrom ran strong to take the win in the 17-24 class, then did the same in the Open A class as he' jumped out front in both moLOS. Jeff Colbert and Chris Rense couldn't match his pace, but had a tremendous dice for second in both rounds. Rense got the upper hand and took second both times. Results 50 MINI: I. Nate Broughton; 2. McCormick strong at Washougal MX By Brian Barnes WASHOUGAL, WA,JUNE20 With sunny skies and near-perfect conditions, over 560 riders showed up for round five of the CMC Pac-West tour at Washougal Motocross Park, where Hillsboro Honda/ AXO/Scott USA/Power Bar-backed Jason McCormick performed a six-moto sweep of the I25cc, 250cc and Open Intermediate classes. . Also impressive was Tyler Fick, who won the Pee Wee Stock class over series points leader Justin Delaware. Fick took the lead on the start of moto one over Joey Mancuso and brothers Cody and Justin .Delaware. Fick maintained his lead for the entire race for the victory over Mancuso. . Fick once again got a great start in moto two, and after working through first-lap traffic, was up front. Fick cruised ahead for his second moto win and won the overall over Justin Delaware. . Eric Williams was also a terror today, winning two classes and finishing runner-up in one other:. In moto one of the 60cc 9-11 class, Jeremy Gray took the holeshot with Justin Delaware, Ty Kavaney, Dan Grahm and Cory Clark in tow. By lap two Williams had moved into second from his eighth-place start and was bearing down 0 Gray.
