LAS VEGAS, NV, JUNE 6-7
Mark Foster earned the victory in the AMN
CCS Southwest Region Unlimited GP,
defeating Marcello Del Guidice of Deerfield
Beach, Florida, in a road racing battle that
went the full 18 laps at Las Vegas International Speedway.
Foster and Del Guidice, both mounted on
Yamaha GP machines, came from the back
of the 20-bike field and moved into the lead
positions on lap nine. They swapped passes
every lap, with Foster gaining a slight
advantage in lap 15. Del Guidice made a
valiant effort to catch Foster in the last
minutes of the race, but 4M Racing/BK
Racing/Neo Oil/Mission Yamaha/Baker
Bros.-sponsored Foster crossed the finish line
with a wheel in front. The Yamaha contingency and AMAlCCS purse totalled $750 for
first place.
.
This was the first event in the region this
yeaar to feature contingencies provided by
Yamaha, Honda; and Suzuki. Although the
Honda purse went unclaimed, as no
CBR900RR motorcycles were entered, a
handful of National circuit racers showed up
to claim Suzuki cash.
James Randolph, Curtis Adams and Dean
Mizdal were among those who pocketed
Suzuki Cup money for their performance in
the Supersport series classes. In the Heavyweight Supersport race, Mizdal started out in
the lead, but Randolph overcame a fifth row
grid position to dominate in lap five.
Randolph kept his lead to the checkered flag.
In the Unlimited Supersport race, Mizdal
again took the holeshot, but by mid-race was
engaged in a tight battle with Adams. Adams'
bike negotiated the curves better, and he
pulled ahead by three bike lengths at the
finislt.
Brad Stephens'first-place finish in the
Middlewei~ht Supersport sprint marked
Stephens' fIrst win since his return to road
rahng.. During a National race in 1991,
Stephens suffered collarbone injuries which
required multiple sur!l:eries. His front row

the easy win over Hampshire.

the lead with Hampshire, Pocorobba, Yoho
and Brett Stromsnes behind. Pocorobba
passed Hampshire in the second tum, as
DeVane opened up a lead over the field.
DeVane then slid out in a tum giving
Pocorobba the lead. Pocorobba and DeVane
battled for a lap before DeVane retook the lead
for good.. Yoho's bike quit,. while David
Sheren passed Stromsens on the last lap. At

in second.

to have Pocorobba close the gap. Sybert and
Pocorobba battled [or the lead as Carmich, ael
slipped by' Lamb for third. Sybert then crashed
and remounted in last spot. Pocorobba looked
to have the win in the bag but in the last
turn he slid out, handing the win to
Carmichael.

to finish, while Carmichael, Sybert, and David
Sanderson fought for the second spot. Sybert

Hare Scrambles win
By Arlene Hejlek
TEBBIITS, MO, JUNE 14
Steve Leivan was the overall winner at the
seventh round of the Missouri Hare Scrambles
Series hosted by Show-Me Motosports.
Leivan's assault was waged from second
position as he dogged leder Jerry Hemann
while they circled the 7.5-mile course six times
during the two-hour event. On the fifth lap
Leivan took the lead when Hemann tangled
with a lapped rider in a long and rocky creek
bed. Answer/Silkolene/Pro Circuit!Acerbis/
Sprocket Specialists/Scott/Camelback/Surdyke Yamaha/Fredette Racing/RK Chainsponsored Leivan pressed ahead to claim the
overall win by a two-minute margin.
Hemann held second position while Leigh
Letellier worked his way up from the back
of the pack to finish third with fourth-place
finisher Terry Gilliland on his heels at the
end.
Fifth overall went to Intermediate class
winner Chris Graber who shot into the lead
at the start and caught up to the tail-end of
the Expert class on the first lap. While trying
to make a pass in a creek secuon, Graber hit
a rock and went over the bars head first into
the water. A few nervous seconds-seemed like
minutes as he tried to find the surface, but
he made it and got going again without losing
first position.
Doug Frieze came out on top in the 250cc
class battle while Dave Altman untangled
himself [rom barbed wire and wrestled his bike
out of a mud hole to claim second place when
Gary Mittleberg dropped back with a flat front
tire.
Four-Stroke winner Ricky Matteson worked
his way up from a fourth-place start to finish
