AHRMA Historic Cup Series: Round 6 Roper, Moroney outshine past champs at Loudon By Matt Benson LOUDON, NH, JUNE 18 pectators might have come to see the likes of Gary Nixon and Dave Aldana mix it up on machinery of the past, but the real stars of the show, a AHRMA Historic Cup Series event and round two of the BMW Classic Cup Series, were current vintage speed, sters Dave Roper and Pat Moroney. Riding under the Team Obsolete banner at Loudon, Nixon was aboard a Matchless G50 and Aldana competed on the ex-Dick Mann works BSA Rocket III. Despite a painful wrist problem that made it difficult to steer the 500cc single, let alone operate the clutch, Nixon still managed a thirdplace in AHRMA's showcase class, 500 Premier. Aldana rode' to fifth in Formula 750 and second behind local hero Todd Henning i~ the all-comers Formula GP Open division. R<;>per and Moroney, however, rode like there was a score to settle in the Premier race. Roper chose his main mount, the Team Obsolete AJS 7R, while Moroney, whose family operates an upstate New York Harley-Davidson shop, rode a Harley-Davidson KR750. Despite Roper giving up a displacement advantage of about 400cc, the pair passed and repassed one another lap after lap. In a nail-biter of a finish, it was class champ Roper at the line, shadowed by Moroney. Moroney said later it was a perfect race, marred only by the fact that he was beaten by a 350. The smoothriding Roper also took the AJS to the win in 350cc GP. For the fiTst time ever, AHRMA offered a race for vintage sidecars, and this .too provided plenty of action. After six laps of roaring, sliding and squealing tires, Mark Gibson and his 1957 BMW kneeler narrowly beat the next three outfits to the checkered flag. Bob Coy and his 1960 BMW 600 led twice but fell back to fourth behind Andrew Fairbank (Yam) and Tom Verville (BMW) at the finish. Erich BIey and his 1938 BMW R51SS was a double winner. In Pre-1940 action, Butch Baer looked like a sure 'victor, until he noticed oil on the rear tire of his 1926 Indian Scout and eased up, allowing Bley to catch and pass him for the win. Class C was a BMW 1-2, with Bley coming home ahead of Ozzie Auer's 1939 R5ISS. Henning of Provincetown, Massachusetts, bested Bley's record for the day by taking home a trio of firstplace trophies and one second. Henning's 1972 Honda CR450 carried him to an against-the-odds win in Sportsman 750cc against the much-bigger S Name: -:- _ Address: ----'- City: _ Zip: _ _ Slale: Leatherstocking Country, n.y. 327 N.
