eLOCAL EVENTS . e Lanny Allen (593) led the start of theC Superbike race at Putnam Park and continued to dominate the Novice class in WERA's North Central region. Scotty Brant (right) was hot in Speedway racing at Victorville's San Bernardino County Fairgrounds, winning both the Handicap and the Scratch programs. machines of Larry Kirby (Yam) and Jesse Morris (Tri). Against the bikes of similar capacity in Sportsman 500cc, Henning's Honda managed second behind BMW-mounted Verville. A 1972 Yamaha TR3 was Henning's weapon of choice for his two other wins -. in Formula GP Heavyweight over TR3~mounted Rick Soles and George Oiegar, and in the no-points Formula GP Open over Aldana and the Honda CR750 of Kurt Liebmann. Jerry Wood of Penguin racing school fame followed in fourth aboard his 1966 Rickman-Triumph in the Open race, but used his intimate knowledge of the Loudon circuit to top class champ Pat Conroy's HD XR750 and Norton-mounted Pete Kogut in F-750.· eN could turn some heads at the Grand National Finals in November. Allen started the day by finishing third overall and first Novice in the combined A Superstock Expert/A Production Novice race. While Paul Volpe was running away with the Expert win, Allen charged through to challenge Expert Matt Macheca for second place overalL Macheca was able to hold off Allen, but the rookie made him sweat. . In Allen's three other classes (:8 Production, C Production and C Superbike,) he was so dominant that each race was decided after just a few laps. Dan Wade and Ron Truax were the best of the rest in the Novice ranks, splitting two second-place finishes behind Allen. After a year off, veteran racer David Probst is making good progress in his return to racing. Probst pulled away from an early challenge by Paul Volpe to win the Formula One Expen class. Probst turned some oneminute, 17-second laps on his Suzuki GSXR 1100, which were among the fastest times of lhe weekend. Probst had also won the two-hour regional endurance race held on Saturday. "I had to sit out a year to get things in order," said len-year veteran Probst. "I now have a threeyear plan, and in that time span I'll find out how far I can go in the sport." The Hayden boys were back at Putnam after traveling all night from a din-track race. Founeen-year-old Tommy Hayden won the Formula Clubman race on his Moto Liberty Honda, with younger brother Nicky coming in a close second. . AMA Schoolboy scrambles and flat track competition, has stayed with racing, and now as he begins high school he is continuing his former success. His well prepped 250cc Honda was the machine to catch as he was an easy winner in 500cc Expert and Open Expert competition. '. The most serious battle the youngster encountered was in the 500cc Expert final when he got away with his worst start of the night. Out front was Danny Ritchie on his Yamaha and tucked in behind was Billy Luker on another Yamaha. On lap three Murphree found a way around Luker and set his sights on long-time friend Ritchie. Late in the 12'lap event, Murphree found an opening coming out of turn two and put an inside pass on Ritchie before they got to turn three. Murphree held the position to the checkers with Ritchie second and a late-charging Kevin Crowley on a Woods-Rotax getting by Luker before the finish line for third. Another double main event winner was amateur Paul Herman on a Yamaha fourstroke, who took the honors in the 500cc and Open Novice final events. Herman's only flaw on a perfect eve'ning was his second place in the 500cc heat race. He won the Open Novice heat race. The success of Herman was chiefly attributed to his expert cornering ability and tremendous drive off the turns. Tom DiSalvo hung on after being displaced by Herman in the 500cc Novice final and earned a very popular second place. Lesley Peterson took her 60cc Kawasaki to a heat race and final event victory over some very talented male riders. Results 200 GP: I. Ivo Slezak (Due); 2. Edward Sensenig (Due); 3. Indianapolis rider Lanny Allen ·entered his Indy Cycle & Ski Yamaha FZR 600 in four races at Putman Park, and polished off the weekend with four convincing victories. Every couple of years in WERA racing a Novice class rider begins winning so convincingly that the Experts take notice. Such is the case with Allen. So far this season, secondyear rider Allen has had a nearly perfect record in WERA North Central competition. Though it is still early to speculate, many racing .pundits in the 'area think that Allen Results F·I EX: 1. David ~robst (Suz); 2. Paul Volpe (Sw); g. Matt Macheca (Sw): 4. Nick Morehouse (Suz); 5. Sober Photo by Jim Thorn VICTORVILLE, CA, JUNE 13 Brilish League hopeful "Suicide" Scolty Brant made a shambles of the Scratch and Handicap programs at the San Bernardino Fairgrounds. Brant made use of new rulechange that allows riders to utilize the larger diameter 22-inch rear tire in the Handicap portion of the program. A near-sellout crowd of 3200 also saw Brant dominate the Scratch event with a standard 19-inch rear wheel. The six-lap six rider Handicap main event" began with 10-yard rider Rob Ball taking the initial lead over 40-yard starters Charlie Venegas and Louis Kossuth. Behind them on the 50-yard-line were Steve Lucero, Chris Manchester and Brant. As the .pack entered turn one, it was obvious that Brant was not to be denied. The 23-year-old from Riverside drove his Russell Racing/Prime Ticket/Vent Goggles/Event Tech Services-backed Jawa around the entire field by the end of the initial lap, winning the night's final Handicap race by a ~de margin. Venegas also went to the outside line and managed to hold off Lucero to finish second. Lucero was also using the new 22-illch rear wheel for the Handicap races, but was a bit more lentativeon thefast outside circle and settled for third. Two-time National Champion Bobby "Boogaloo" Schwartz began the Scratch main event from the number two starting position and was the first to react as the tapes went up. As Schwartz exited turn two he had Louis Kossuth, who came from the inside pole position, pushing at his rear tire and trying to get by on the low inside line. Brant, who came from the fourth and outside starting grid, was maintaining a torrid pace on. the outside dirt line, that would propel him well past the two inside riders and into the lead. Schwartz drove hard, staying on the inside line, but could not reel in Brant, who was obviously hot tonight. The Sidecar main event was the typical wild affair that fans have come to love and expect. The team of Kenny McIntyre/Mickey Faust got the holeshot, while, behind them the race was on for second between Don Partain/Mark Adams and Ross Millar/Dale Leeder. Partain/Adams drove into second place as Millar/Leeder looked for a way around. By the end of the white-flag lap Millar/Leeder pulled up beside Patain/Adams and stayed there to the checkered flag. Millar/Leeder were credited with second, apparently crossing the line a few inches ahead of Partain/ Adams, while McIntyre/Faust ran away to claim the victory. Results SCRA,TCH: 1.
