Starwest Night MX Series: Round 1 Starwest Motocross opener to Upton By Chris Jonnum Hayden brothers on top at Nelson Ledges RR By Larry Bell GARRETSVILLE, OH, JUNE 6,7 oungsters Tommy and Nicky Hayden, 14 and 12, respectively, showed up at the Nelson Ledges Road Course and captured the hearts of the fans by finishing first and second in the Formula Clubman class on their Honda RS 125 s. The Haydens, both backed by MotoLiberty, Sam Yamashita, Tsubaki, Shoei, SBS, NGK and Motul, watched and talked with the more experienced veteran riders all weekend, then put their new-found knowledge to work on the unforgiving two-mile asphalt ribbon. The crowd was very enthusiastic, lining the course and shouting their encouragement to the boys, who have only been competing in road races for a few years. Redline/Performance by Gary/ Sportcycle/Maier/K&N-backed Darryl Y 28 3aylor also had a succes, sful weekend, nailing down wins in the C Superstock and C Superbike categories.. In the C Superbike race, Saylor and Dan Sabol hooked up for a wild race that featured several crashes resulting in red flags. The race was originally red-flagged due to a crash on the first lap, which resulted from a thrown chain and an oil-covered first turn, and' ended with an ambulance ride for one of the competi·tors. After the mayhem had cleared, Saylor managed to turn several laps in the one minute-twelve' second range on an old Yamaha 600cc. Saylor also took second in Saturday's two-hour Endurance competition, teaming up with Ray Chilson as Dominator Racing, again aboard a 600cc Yamaha. The duo was topped by C&M Racing, in a race that featured a starting grid of 53 teams, and a waiting list of several other teams. Both C&M Racing and Dominator racing finished the event with 64 laps, while Team Swine Dudes II finished third with 63 laps completed. Many teams used the event as a warm-up for an upcoming 24-hour race. PERRIS, CA, JlTNE 20 tarwest Supercross Park held its grand opening and Donald Upton appeared to have the track dialed, scoring wins in die 125 and 250cc Pro classes. The racing was preceded by a grand opening ceremony that included Team Kawasaki's Jeff Ward clicking off several laps on the new track, and commenting, "It's a nice track, especially for amateurs. It could use some whoops on the straights, but the din is really great and loamy." The first moto of the 125cc Pro class saw teve Shippy pull the holeshot over Chris Ridgway and Upton. Upton moved by Ridgway and passed Shippy on lap two over a table jump. Soon· Upton had built a 12-second cushion, which he continued to expand upon. Shippy put a small lead on Ridgway, but he began to tire on the final lap, allowing Ridgway to challenge for second, but Shippy held his position to the checkers. As with most of the classes, the second moto provided closer action as .the riders became accustomed to the S new course. Ridgway was first into turn one ahead of Shippy and Upton. Shippy came up short over a ,double and went over the bars directly in front of Upton, who landed on the downed bike but 'avoided crashing. While the crash was serious enough to break Shippy's handlebars in half, he was okay, stating "I don't know why I crashed. I think my gas was turned off. Oh well, it happens." With Shippy out of the race only Upton and Ridgway remained, but the two riders battled closely throughout the moto. Ridgway maintain~d his lead with Upton trying every move he knew to get around, at one point nearly clipping a track marker. Finally Ridgway bobbled, allowing Upton to get around and stay in front to the finish. Upton congratulated Ridgway's efforts, stating, "He was riding great. I just had to wait for a mistake, and when he made one I got him. The track is tight but fun." The combined Over-25 Beginner and Novice/Over-30 Intermediate/ Over-40 Master event drew a large field. While the classes were scored separately, they started on the same gate and provided plenty of passing and dicing. Steve Plattoni led into the first turn of moto one, with Dennis Cole and Robert Little close behind. Little quickly passed Cole and set out after Plattoni, while behind them c.T. Falk had the most spectacular crash of the evening, looping his bike over a huge step-down jump. Plattoni began to pull away from Little, while Cole was overtaken by Scott Highland. The order remained the same throughout the mota, with Plattoni taking the win over Little and Highland. Falk lined up his twisted YZ for moto two, apparently having recovered from his get-of£. Again, .the second moto provided the most action, and Little started it off with a holeshot over Mark Green and Plattoni. In the second turn, Green and Glenn Delatorre made contact and went down, with both riders flipping off the track. Green remounted only to case it over some doubles, but he charged gamely on. Plattoni quickly moved into the lead and started to pull away from the pack. Little rode in second with Hi~hlimd third. Lap three saw Little over-jump a double and almost crash, but he saved it and was able to maintain his position. Highland came close to crashing over the finish-line jump, but saved it and began to close on Little. On the final circuit, Highland was right behind Lit~le and looking for a way around, but Little held him off for second. Despite a delay when the lights went out in the sec0nd 80cc moto, copromoter Vince Agnafili felt that the opening was a success. "We had a fair number of entries, but lots of fans, so we're happy. I think the riders kick it up a notch when they see a bunch of people in the grandstands. They feel like they're performing." 0 Results 50 P W STK BEG: I. Brody Bolling (ITJ): 2.
