VOL. 50 ISSUE 28 JULY 16, 2013 so quickly is a big surprise, especially considering none of these guys have been on the ground in a race. I kind of thought I was going to have to have something like that, some zero point weekends, to get myself back into this. Martin's [Cardenas] had only one fourth-place finish and the rest of them he's been on the podium. I'm quite surprised I've got back so quickly." And even in Sunday's race, where Hayes was given a fivesecond penalty for anticipating the start that cost him the victory, he was able to come out smelling like a rose. Despite finishing second, Hayes found his points lead grow to four points, now over Monster Energy Yamaha teammate Herrin, who won the race because of the penalty. Hayes is second on the all-time AMA Superbike wins list and first among active riders. Josh Herrin's win in race two was his second-career victory. That puts Herrin in company with Kurtis Roberts, Alessandro Gramigni, Mike Hale, John Ashmead, John Bettencourt, Ron Pierce and Paul Ritter - all riders who have won two AMA Superbike races. The first of two AMA Superbike Nationals gets started on Saturday at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course with Josh Herrin (2) and Josh Hayes (1) ready to tussle over the lead. Roger Lee Hayden (54), Martin Cardenas (36) and the rest give chase. This year was the 30th anniversary of AMA Pro road racing at Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Mike Baldwin won the first road race National in the inaugural AMA event at MidOhio on a Honda in the old Formucontinued on next page
