Langley takes two at Sears Point MX By Bill Spencer Photo by Doug Meduetz SONOMA, CA, DEG. 12 Round two of Sears Point Raceway's Winter Series started under beautiful skies with almost warmth and sunshine on the concrete hard track and miraculously finished despite the douds that came over the hill just after the start of the second round .of motos. The nearly 300 riders had a good tinie on the slightly changed track from last week, but when the sky opened up, a mass exodus was on hand. Pete Langley added a new CR480R Honda to his collection and then went out and won both the 250cc and Open Expert classes in a very fast, gas-it-up style. His 250cc competition was once again Beau Magly, who finished with a pair of twos, with Larry Lengner the likewise with threes. Howie Ross put on a fine charge in the second round, while it was still dry, coming off a 5-4 for fourth overall on his Redwood Cycles Suzuki and Mark Stirling finished fifth (6-5). Langley had no trouble winning the first Open Expert round, while Bob Davis fell after a plug fouling episode and wound up eighth. But in the mud and slime of the second round, Davis led easily and with great style to win while Langley had to work extra hard from the back of the pack to finish second. Langley took the overall with what might bea good start on the upcoming Golden State Series. The Old Timers and Vets got their second moto going in the midst of the slime, with many either going home or hanging out to watch. Leroy Francard had gotten second in the OT Novice, but didn't want to take a' chance with his recently healed leg) which gave Bob Hurst the easy win. Rich Schilling and Steve Weiss dtoaded ti and ere atthe bottom of the hill on the way out when the call came to run the race. They both unloaded and restarted a lap down, but managed to win their respective classes. Jerry DeKay and Dave Morgan had the best fight with Morgan winning the Vet Expert class over DeKay, who had more falls. Shirlyn Smith held off Debbie Guytow for the Women's class win. Word wallops Medford Expo indoor ST By Clay and Suanne Light MEDFORD, OR, DEC. II Frank Word III walloped two heavily competitive main events at Medford's Expo Center on his Electro West/R&B Racing/ Simpson Sports/Out Front Number Plates/Yam Sports Center/Yam machinery tonight, winning the exciting Open Pro and 250cc A Main events: Jeff Harsha (Data ControJi Yam Sports Center/Yam) won what could be one of his last races as a Novice by taking the Open A main inside the spectacular Jackson County facilities, witnessed by a near capacity crowd. The 250cc A main had 12 contestants which due to the wider, longer eighth-mile course, made extra room for two more contestants in the tworow event. Word led off the line followed by AMAJunior, and soon to be. Expert, Barry Pelkey (Simpson/Megacycle Cams/Yam Sports Center/ Yam), Robert Horban (Yam Sports Center) and Semi-winner Jeff Campbell. These four pulled away from the pack to settle into quite a battle. Word came acro5.§ the line to b~g the win over Pelkey, Horban and Campbell, who if given a few more laps, surely would have joined Word. Fifth went to Harsha followed by AMA Novice Bob Ingel and Eugene speedster Greg Reynard (O'Neal/Light Racing Products/Hon). Harsha won his heat race which placed the local hero on the pole position in a 10 rider main. Harsha, who in two weeks will be shedding his red and white Novice plates to make room for his yellow/black Junior plates, gave all on hand an idea of wQat he is planning to do next season in AMA action by leading Ingel (Yam), Bob Klum (Hon of Grants Pass) and brother Joe Klum, also Honda mounted. Harsha had relatively no problems winning this one by a huge deficit over Ingel, who put in one of his best finishes to date. Bob Klum finished third. The final main event of the evening was a 15-lap Open Pro (Money) main on 250 to 750cc machinery. Horban was definitely stoked after a close-one in his heat race and shot off the line in a blaze of glory to lead Word, who was 250 mounted, and Pelkey. Horban and Word set up a classic battle of the bars with Harsha holding third as Pelkey took a spill, but remounted quickly enough to hold down fifth. Brett-Clayton pushed a wheel into the mass-confusion to move into the top six with three laps to go. At that point, Horban let Word slip past, but came back like a rocket to take it back until hismachie seized coming into home stretch, which gave Word his second win of the night over Harsha, who inherited second due to Horban's misfortune. Clayton took a third over Pelkey and Horban, who pushed across the line. Results OPEN PRO: 1. Frank Word III (Yam); 2. Jeff Harsha (Yam); 3. Brett Clayton (Han). OPEN A: 1. Jeff Harsha (Yam); 2. Scott, Gray shine indoors at Red Bluff By Marty Scott RED BLUFF, CA, DEG. II Rilly Scott made his ~eturn to the track after a five mon th layoff, the result of being injured at the Indy Mile round oj the Winston Pro Series on July 3. Kenny Gray, coming off a successful Speedway season, outclassed a large Expert field as they took the 500 and 250cc Expert wins, respectively, at the Sun Country Fair's Pauline Davis Pavilion in Red Bluff. Perri Turner looked like the sure 250cc Novice winner after grabbing a big holeshot and opening up a good lead before falling while exiting turn two on the white £lag lap. Ed Orput took over for the win, with David Chaidez second and Joey Bolen third over Turner. . Mark Schmeck was the 250cc Junior winner over John Guy and hometown favorite Walt Bevens. Dale Hansen grabbed the early lead in the 250cc Expert over Gray and Donny Howard. Hansen and Gray continued to battle throughout, until Hansen bobbled coming out 01 two, and Gray took the lead and the win. Howard was third and Doug Mignano fourth. Tim Skov picked up the fifth and final payoff spot. The Mini class winners were Todd Damron, 80cc Novice Class C, Robby Bevens, 80cc Novice Knobbys and Tommy Seidel, 80cc Junior/Expert. Rollen Eskew was the 500cc Novice winner with Lewis Cannon second. Randy Holycross led the- 500cc Juniors wire to wire on his BSA, taking the win by a wide margin over Walt Bevens. The 500cc Experts were totally outclassed as Scott coasted to a commanding win, Scott looked in top form despite his long layoff. Scott Nail was second over Doug Mignano. Oregon's Robbie Blagg came back from a bad start to the 125cc Expert win at the checkered £lag. Results 250 NOV: 1. Ed Orput; 2. David Chaidez; 3. Joey Bolen. 250 JR: 1. Mark Schmeck; 2. John Guy; 3. Colemans cash in on SHR '83 victories By The Ranchhands BRENTWOOD, CA, DEG. 5 Sand Hill Ranch wasted no time in getting the 1983 race season underway today. Lance and Larry Coleman found the rougher than usual track to their liking as they rode off with the Open and 250cc Pro money. Mike Holmes led the 250cc Pro class for one lap of the natural terrain track and managed a spectacular crash that put him out for both motos. Doug McRae, the new number one Continental Motosports Club 250cc plate holder, took over the lead and held it for the rest of the moto. Irv Archzinger's and Robert Day's Hondas held second and third until Larry Coleman's Husky hustled by for an easy second finish. McRae had his problems in moto two and DNF, and Coleman left the field behind for the overall. Jerry Brandt, 1983 number one CMC Open Pro, got off to a good start with Matt Arena's Suzuki holding second. Not to be upstaged by Holmes' crash earlier' 'in' the 'day,
