"' 00 $0-4 Q) ..c S Q) u Q) -o Berluti tops Team Tux Nevada MX By Mota Oepo STEAD, NV, NOV. 14 Alan Berluti, riding a White's Cycle Husqvama CR500, continued to dominate northern Nevada Motocross today. This (Above) Two riders negotiate two different types of "junkyard obstacles" at the Northwest Challenge stadium trials. Klaudt, Albee, Oster 'score at S.I.R. MX By SUAn Brown KENT, WA, NOV.. 14 There were a couple of upsets today at Seattle InternatIonal Raceway's MX, and one of them was in the Mini A class. Riding --18 a borrowed Honda, Steve Oster holeshot both motos and stole the win from Kawasaki support rider and series points leader I...arry Ward. In the 125cc A class there was another upset, but this time it was Suzuki rider Rick Albee doing the upsetting and Oster was the one getting upset. Currently leading the points in ·this class, Oster took an "over the bars" fall in moto one that put him back to a 19th place finish. Jeff Chapman, riding a brand new Suzuki, took the moto win and put himself three points shy of Oster in the standings. Oster won moto two and Chapman finished fourth. The overall went to Albee. The Chapman/ Oster points duel will go down to the wire at the series final. The most exciting race of the day was the 250cc Pro clash with nine contenders. Tom Moen (Seattle Hon) holeshot moto one with Stan Lund (Kaw) right beside him. Cory Klaudt (Yam) worked his way up to third. Lund took the lead from Moen, then Klaudt took the lead from hini. The color in this race was green as Logan Edrington (Kaw) moved up to fourth. When Moen landed on his feet instead of his bike after the doubles, Edrington moved into third. Jon Jacobson (Suz) challenged Edrington, but Logan held him off. In moto two Lund followed Klaudt out of the chute. There was a lot of position movement in this race. These riders were all very close. Moen took second from Lund who promptly took it back, only to lose it again. Lund now had to contend with Edrington right on his rear wheel, waiting for his moment. Edrington made his move and took Lund and then Moen, Klaudt was way out front. Tim Olsen (Kaw) made a mad white flag charge passing Moen and going for a spectacular finish. He sailed off the doubles and tried to get by Ed· rington. Olsen was inches shy of second. The Pee Wees ran a good race with all classes running together. Rod Stanley (Yam) holeshot and stayed out front until the last lap when Casey Jones (Yam) took over. In moto two Stanley got the early lead, but gave it over to Jones on lap two. Jones held for the win. B class rider was Team Tux's second race and track preparation and variety is their main goal; they succeeded at both. The track went from frozen marbles of earth with no traction in practice, to soft wet loamy sand and primo traction in the second moto, a difficult and demanding track to all. In a combined Pro class, Berluti led both motos start to finish. He lost a silencer about three laps from the finish. which was the only fault in his complete dominance of the race. The real racing was going on behind him for second place. In the first moto, newly-turned Pro Beau Hibdon (KTM) held on to second until the last few laps, when Shirt jazz's Al McElroy took that position away from him, with Hibdon third· and hard-charging Reno Kawasaki rider Jeff Cloutier fourth, but first 250cc Pro. While Berluti was running away with the second moto Cloutier continued his hard charge and ran away with second. McElroy diced awhile with Ricky DeCarlo (Mai), but then departed for third. Hibdon tried to come from behind, but found it harder to pass Experts than Juniors and didn't succeed. The most exciting race of the day was the combined Juniors. Motorcycle Specialty rider Chester Martinmaas, on a Specialty-framed Honda 500cc four-stroke, and Stan Smith on a new 1983 Suzuki RM250 provided most of the action. The first moto was normal with both Martinmaas and Smith working through traffic to finish first and third, respectively. The second moto was where the action was with Smith grabbing the holeshot and Dirt Jazz's Loren Caudle (Mai) pursuing in second. Martinmaas was running midpack, working his way up. Smith continued to hold his lead with Martinmaas passing Caudle for second about halfway through the moto. Martinmaas tried everyway to get around Smith, so he could use the superior power of the Open bike, but Smith rode flawlessly and took the win. In the Mini class, Chad Kay (Kaw) turned Expert and ran away with his first win. Newly turned Junior Mark Lawson, who was one point away from winning the state championship, was an easy winner in his class. Past Mini biker David McCombs (Suz) is showing his rear wheel to the 125cc Novices and was first over Ray Dragoo (Yam) and Craig Poner (Yam) in division two. Results 50 NOV: 1. Ralph Parks. Pyle grabs Northwest Challenge indoor trials By Russ Cazier EUGENE, OR, NOV. 13 Dave Pyle and Dale Dorcas ended the first round of the Northwest Challenge indoor stadium trials series tied at 17 points. Their nearest competition was nationally ranked Brad Skreen at 22 points at the end of the initial loop. The rest of the IO-man invitation· only field scored more than 30 points. Dorcas posted a nigh. unbelievable eight point final loop and appeared to be a sure winner, but Pyle, lured to Eugene from Arizona by the $1100 prize money, showed why he recently got a factory ride from SWM by turning in a seven to lead the match. At this point, the only rider with even a mathematical chance for a win was Skreen, but he would have had to pull off a two to tie, an impossible task, and when Skreen got a five on the' third section, Pyle was home free. The indoor trials was conducted in a covered building at the Lane County Fairgrounds, in an arena often used for rodeos, and there wasn't a bad seat in the house. Television spots in the Eugene area were credited for the excellent attendance at the event. As one spectator said, viewing his first trials event of any kind, "I don't know how any motorcyclist could see one of those ads of guys doing impossible things and not want to see it." The trials consisted of 16 sections and included a three tier, IO-foot high section of piled railroad ties, a wrecker truck traversed from back to front, an eight foot high truck tire and an awesome 30 foot teeter board. . Dave Hansen, well known to the Portland motorcycle community commented, "If I could just get a motorcycle through all these things in an afternoon I'd be real proud of myself. These guys do it in five minutes without putting their feet down. Amazing." .. - .. . ..
