e- ern Ne.ada- Southern Callfornla-Arlzona-Southern Neva. bunched together and fighting for room. Ben Gonzales led the way, holding Chris Matthews to second down to the wire with Cole Brothers' Mike James rounding out the threesome. When the checkered flag waved them home, Gonzales took home the gold with a 7-1 tally, Katz ended the day with second place honors and third overall was Tapia. Phil Larson, piloting a 1983 preproduction Honda in the Open Pro class, riveted the spectators to the fence with a dazzling display of aerial acrobatics and mile high cross-ups over the stadium jumps. While Larson was clearing the triple jumps in a single bl;>und, Honda-support racer Ed Arnet was smooth as silk and in control of the pack, riding shotgun over a course that was bottoming out suspension and busting wheels right and left. Behind Arnet, Gary DePillo looped his Yamaha radically over the jumps that Larson was flying over. The crowd soon dubbed Larson "Space Shuttle" and watched as he pulled an awesome lead over the rest of the field, easily winning the moto with Arnet second and Don Hoover third. When the big bore machines came to life for their final round of action, Larson once more assumed command on his way to double gold. As before, Arnet settled into second and fought to hold Hoover to third. By moto's end, Larson claimed top dollar for the day, Arnet scooped up second place and Hoover took home third overall. Norlund nabs night MXatCorona By Kit Palmer CORONA, CA, NOV. 19 Eighteen riders lin~d the ~r ona Raceway startmg gate m 125cc Beginner class and when ~ all the action had ended, Ron Norlund (Yam) proved to be the be the best of the bunch. Tonight Norlund had to work his way up through the pack after two fair starts before he could claim first place in both motos. After the field had pushed and shoved their way through the first turn of the first moto it was Lance Felnagle who had pushed the hardest. Felnagle found himself in the lead only inches ahead of Tracy Laye (Hon), Tim Williams (Yam), Mike Williams (Kaw) and Norlund. But by lap two Norlund had roosted by both TIm and Mike Williams and he then set after Laye and Felnagle. In no time at all Norlund had control of the lead. Cruising in third and hot on Felnagle's rear fender was Laye. With only two laps remaining Laye saw his chance and made the move on Felnagle, taking over the second spot. When the checkered appeared it was Norlund who smoked by with the win followed by Laye, Felnagle and Tim Williams. The second moto start went to Alex Posca (Yam) while the rest of the pack pursued. By the end of the second lap Norlund began to put heavy pressure on the leader. Thepressure was a bit too much for Posco to handle, which gave the first moto winner the lead. Posca stayed close to Norlund but Norlund held on to take the win. Posca had to settle with a close second while Mike Williams and Tony Wright (Yam) took third and fourth. In the Mini Expert class it was another close battle between Sunwest Yamaha riders, Steve Gamble (Yam) and Terry Szuscko (Yam). The two fought handlebar to handlebar in both motos and it was Gamble who took the win. Szuscko won the first moto but fell in the second while in the lead. Gamble's 2-1 combo gave him the overall while Szuscko's 1-4 tally gave him second. Third went to Kawasaki-mounted Alex Mansfield (Kaw). • Results 80 PEEWEE: 1. Shane Good (Yam); 2.
