plate and only managed a 49 which put him in eighth place. Drew Smith ran out of gas a number of times in the tight woods section, resulting in a disappointing loss of 88 points for the day. "You could just say it wasn't our day," summarized Team Green's captain Jack Penton. He finished 14th overall, dropping 58 points. A number of A riders surprised people and moved in ahead of several AA riders in the top 20 standings. Randy Kline. who won high point A honors, tied with Mike Melton for a loss of 39 points but was 16 seconds faster with his emergency check scores to finish third. It was the same story between Jeff Russell and Jeff Fredette in the battle for fifth or sixth place as each dropped 40 points total. The Schuler brothers, John and Dan. rounded out the top ten with scores of 51 and 52 respectively. Tony Mitchell, who grew up riding a motorcycle through these woods, is the current president of the sponsoring West Kentucky Trail Riders. He had a crew of five working with him to layout the 101.2 miles o( trails that were included in this run. The club has access to almost limitless amounts of land on the eastern shores of Lake Barkley around the tiny,. town of Linton. Much of this land is only used for flood control purposes by the U.S. Army Corps o( Engineers and is grown over with vines and brush. While trails were well arrowed, early riders had to be careful because the trail, much of which ran over rocky dry creek bottoms, was obscured in a thick mantle of leaves. Seeking to give AA and A class riders an adequately challenging ride without losing too many B riders in the process, the club divided the course for about 15 miles immediately after the first gas stop. The A and AA riders and anyone else who wanted to be considered for overall honors, took a hard turn into the woods while the B riders were routed over a section of gravel roads. This gave most B riders a chance to get back on time and generally gave them bener scores at the fifth check. "Best run they ever had here," said Wayne Foster. "Their trails were beautiful-the only problem was the feeling you had that they would never end." "That section for A and AA riders was a real bear." moaned Dan Higgins. "But more fun than I've had in a long time." The WKTR have always believed in the theory that an exhausted rider is a satisfied rider and over 300 individuals fit both categories Sunday evening. This was their 13th annual enduro and the fourth time it had been part of the National circuit. When it is a National. the Twin States utilizes many of the facilities o( Lake Barkley State Resort Park. This is the jewel of the Kentucky park system and the management bends over backwards to treat riders and their families to a memorable weekend. The start/finish area was located in a large grassy field about a half mile from the park's airport. Alabama rider Darryl Moody decided this was too good to pass up and flew himself and his Suzuki PEI75 up for the weekend. The trail was laid out so that riders passed close to the park's golf course, giving them a chance to decide if they should try to playa quick nine after the run. When the 'weather turned warm for a third round of Indian summer. the combination made (or an' ideal run. Before the day was over it was apparent Ll)at some of the most intense competition was among the top three Super Senior class riders. Richard Lenover was not too pleased to find himself on row II. knowing that the luck ofthedraw had put John Buffaloe back on row 91. At Black Coal, Sox Brookhart had made the statement that things would be different in the results at Twin States. When the results were totaled, Buffaloe was quick to let people know that the results were indeed different - he won by even more this time! High point honors among B class riders went to Charlie Nash. who dropped 29 points. "I've been working for this for a long time," he said, knowing that this would advance him to A rider status. Emmett Cox toyed with the idea of riding the A/AA section but decided not to and as a result, came away with the Senior class win-again. Charlie Burk was back on his (our-stroke lionda (or this event and took top honors in the thumper class-again. Gale Vandewater edged out Arlene Dawson for the Powder Puff win. Probably the only sour note of the whole weekend was the injury sus, tained by Erika Raidel. She collided with a truck on a gravel road which resulted in a broken pelvis, damaged spleen and other inj uries. After initial .treatment at a local hospital, she was transported by helicopter to a hospital nearer her home in Westerville, Ohio. • Results OVERALL: Terry Cunningham (Hus) 30.
