CRC hordes hammer Murphy stadium By lee Taylor SAN DIEGO, CA, NOV. 7 The 250cc Novices epitomized what 700 California Racing Club racers came to the Jack Murphy Stdium in San Diego for. A chance to meet, head on, the challenge of supercross and to test their skills on the same track their heroes rode the night before. Fast and furious into the night they rode with Tom Brown piloting his Suzuki intoa victory ride. 'The Runway" claimed rider after rider on the start. Brown guided his mount through the wreckage followed by Jeff Montgomery and Harry Wensel. These top three runners set the pace for a go-for-thegold pack. Wensel found himself involved in the heaviest dice with Chris Pillow. Pillow finally slipped into third, leaving a pack of traffic. Montgomery found himself wheel to wheel with Pillow. Whpn the finish line loomed into sight, Brown emerged the 250cc Novice Champ, Paul Wolfe snaked his way up into second and Pillow's persistence paid off with third overall. Steve Kendall rode his Suzuki straight into the hearts of everyone watching to gather top honors for the 80cc Stock Beginners. Surely, a new Mini star is on the motocross horizon. Not only did Kendall have a field of 35 racers to qualify against, he also found himself racing the same track that had c allenged the National stars the rug; before. Kendall, armed with a 1-2 ride in his qualifiers, found himself in third, fighting off a tight, gnarly pack in the final. Cycle World's Tim Ga1ceran led the charge down the "Air Force Reserve Runway" and into a six foot superberm with Colin Karchov alongside. Suddenly Karchov went down over "Mad Jack's Mogels" and found himself set back to dead last. It was a treacherous ection of track that punished bikes and riders relentlessly. Karchov, obviously hurting, guided his Yamaha back to the line, only to do an about face and return to the race. Galceran's Kawasaki hit a hay bail in the same spot that took out Karchov. Entangled in banners, Ga1ceran tried to escape, nnlhr-trl-""" lied down a ain 'after rounding the bend. It"was then anyone's race. Approaching' the white flag, Kendall was out in front headed for the winner's circle. When the checkered flag brought KendaH home, Robert Forest, of Rosamond Suzuki, claimed second and American Honda's pride and joy, Ronnie Densford, gathered third overall. The 125cc Pro contest saw former Mini Champ Tracy Meeks guide his Team Green Kawasaki through a barn burner of a finale for the gold. Meeks had his work cut out for him. Honda-mounted Louie Franco' was out in front, but Meeks pulled out all the stops and was knocking on Franco's back door. With Pasadena Suzuki's Ro_bbie Brown in third, the action was intense! Brown slipped a wheel under for the runner-up slot and set his sights on Meeks,' who set up command. Meeks, with the fastest lap times of' the,day (only five seconds slower than Broc Glover, Saturday night's champion), was running away from everyone. While Meeks and Brown attacked every inch of the Jack Murphy Stadium track, an aerial dog.fight was shaping up between Rosamond Suzuki's Roger Hensley and Scott Sargent. Getting airborne 0[£ the top of "Miller Mountain," Hensley and Sargent took each other on, in mid-air, and continued their duel upon touchdown. Outrageous action that frightened their staunchest supporters. When the night's battle drew to an end, Meeks led his mount down victory rbw, Brown scooped up second place loot and Sargent took home third. Hen ley claimed fourth place with Franco gathering fifth. Tamm Racing, a new sponsor on the motocross circuit, took home the gold in both 250cc and Open Pro races. With the addition of Mike Shoemaker to their stable of champions, Tamm Racing was making its mark· in the world of supercross. "The . Shoe'! dominBred·(he ·250cc Pro con- test from start to finish. It was the stuff a sponsor's dreams are made of. Throughout their first moto, Shoemaker and his Honda led the way, holding a determined Brian Manley to second and Tamm Racing teammate Jim Brodie to third. A wheel bashing, handlebar locking three-way duel between Manley, Brodie and Matt Tedder went down for second that carried the three men down to the wire. Manley and Brodie emerged second and third respectively. When the machines came to life for their second encounter, "The Shoe" as before, galloped down the stretch and away for his pair of wins, leaving teammate Brodie to hold off the 20rider field. By this point, the Tamm crew was cheering itself hoarse, watching Shoemaker and Brodie take home first and second overall with White holding third to the wire for the moto. Taking home third place loot was Manley. As for the Open Pro action, the gold went home with Brian Fry, Honda-mounted for Tamm Racing. Fry had to fight for his win. First moto hOnors went to Honda support racer Matt Tedder with Philip Alderton, aboard a Husqvarna from Dayton, OH, cinching the econd moto win. Throughout both motos Fry ran second. Good enough for the overall win. Tedder claimed second place loot and Alderton took third overall honors back home to Ohio. The Open Intermediates staged a "dog eat dog" contest from start to finish with Greg Perolio - out of Van Nuys Suzuki - racking up a spectacular pair of wins. Hondamounted Mark Stubbs fought throughout the day, settling for a 3-2 count good enough for second place. With Timothy Allemang, also riding for Husqvarna of Dayton, OH, hounding both Perolio and Stubbs, the action was intense. Allemang found himself taking third place home to Dayton. The 80cc Modified Experts explodedonto the track. Team Green's Kyle Lewis sewed up top honors with a super smooth pair of second place rides, good enough for top honors. Lewis had to fight for the win. ot only did he have American Honda's Mouse McCoy to contend with, but Yamaha Motor's Bobby Moore, Eddie Hicks and Todd Hoover. The list ran likea Who's Whooffactory Mini stars. Throughout the first moto, Bobby Moore battled Lewis and "The Mouse," holdi ng them both to second and third. When the Minis blew off the Ii ne for their final ride, Bader Manneh led the charge, holding Lewis .' once more-to {'h'e'nJAAer-l:lp ·slot and Moore to third. "The Mouse" roared, but, beset with problems, found himself back in sixth and unable to make up the ground he needed to cover for a crack at the win. When the checkered flag waved them home, Lewis picked up the coveted gold, Moore cinched second and Manneh took home third. • Results PEE WEE: 1. Dennis Dahlin II (Yam); 2. Butch Smith (yam); 3.
