The 250cc Expert was the battle of the Titans. No less than six former and current number one plate holders showed up to do battle, and when the dust cleared, Maui's champion and heir to the 250cc throne, Dane Patao, had demolished the opposi tion. Dane clocked-lap times six seconds faster than any of the Expert riders to win both motos easily. Mark Sato, finally picking up a sponsorship from Yamaha of Hawaii, smoothed his previous out of control style into solid seconds. Second moto was other Patao holeshot, his unique turn one style sweeping everyone into the- fence. Sato was hot on Patao, followed by Valentine. Patao left everybody, Valentine went into the bushes to blow second: but came back to put Terry Wood a distant fourth again. Results MINI CYCLES: 1. Blayne Soma (Yam): 2. Roy Kiyabu (Yam); 3. Mason slips to MayerMXwin By Pam Hardin MAYER, AZ, OCT. 17 With the Fall Series winding down, Robert Mason and Russ Winkler traded moto wins in the 125cc Amateur Stock class with Mason getting the nod for the overall by winning the last moto. . In the first moto, Mason had Winkler, Jeff Bonnett and Dennis McElwain to contend with in front. By the second lap, Mason had put away the "Little Mac" and began to pressure Bonnett in second. Mason out-powered Bonnett down the straight, but still had five seconds between himself and leader Winkler. The Yamaha rider in front hung on while a battle for fourth developed between McElwain and Mark Lucas. Lucas nailed the throttle and got McElwain on the uphill. He wasn't through yet, he had the track dialed in and the gas on. On the white flag lap, he caught Bonnett for a third. In the second moto, Winkler took the lead again with Mason not far behind. After three laps they took off from the rest with Bonnett holding third. Winkler and Mason went back and forth with the leader sticking to the inside and Mason trying more power on the outside. By the fourth lap, it was all Mason's race. Keith Watkins took the overall win for the 125cc ovice Stock class by winning his first moto and staying in the top three in the second. In his first ride on a 125, Tom Hunt stayed up to finish first in the Modified's and a second, to Watkins, in Stock. Watkins took his stock bike to the lead in their first moto.with Paul Kellogg and LOP teammate Randy Killman following. Hunt came up fast from a midpack start, while Killman ended up there after a fall. Dave Townsend took second from Kellogg, who had lost some power after losing his exhaust pipe on the third lap. He managed to stay in third while Hunt got pressure from Larry Hamen. They traded positions, but Hunt came out ahead at the finish. In the second moto, Townsend got there first with Hunt and Tracy Reeves rounding out the top three. Townsend and Hun't pulled away while Reeves got pressure from Watkins. He dropped to the back of the pack while Hunt grabbed the lead after two laps. He held it on long.enough to leave everyone else behind. Results Y ZINGERS: 1. Chucky Cook (Yam). PEE WEE NOV: 1. Rosenberg, Leitner win at SSM By Bob Alloy ORANGE, CA, OCT. 9 A strong wind was blowing when the Old Timers first started up for practice, and by the first race there was smoke in the background at the Sat~rday Saddieback motocross. After the fourth race and the start of moto two, the fire had reached the back side of the cycle park and a red flag came out cancelli ng the first race of moto two. So 31 Old Timers along with all the other MXers were ordered to call it quit~ and leave the park. Anyway, we did get our first moto which was the second race. Master Gary Wilson took the lead in moto one for on~ lap, then Dennis Rosenberg took command and held the lead for five laps. Hoyt Statham blasted into the lead for four laps only to have Dennis Rosenberg win the moto on the very last lap. Statham finished second. Manneh hot in Barona Minis By Rod Eschenburg BARONA, CA, OCT. 3 Yamaha-mounted privateer Bader "Bullet" Manneh had the biggest day of his career at Barona Oaks today as he went four for four in winning both the Stock Mini Expert and 105cc Mini Open classes. Manneh was at his best; he was not only flying in the jump and whoop-de-do sections of the demanding Barona course, but was also very quick through the tight turns too. The latter was something that the "Bullet Man" has had problems with in the past. . In the Stock Expert class, Manneh had a relatively easy time with second place going to Cory Falter (Hon), but in the !05cc Minis, Suzuki R&D rider John Conney gave him fits all day and came very close to going to. the lead on several occasions. New Expert Conney came back in the Modified Expert class to grab his first ever Barona Expert victory after an • 'exciting tie-breaker second moto win over Oceanside Honda's Falter. . The top Novice Mini race came in the Stock 12-16 class where Tim Galceran (Kaw) took a squeaker tiebreaker over Gary Pratt (Hon). It was a career high finish for Pratt, and the come from bheind win, by relatively new member Galceran, certainly made everyone sit up and take notice. Lots of .good new Novice Mini riders. The Novice Modifieds also featured a win by another new member from out of the San Diego area. Joey Mendoza (also Kaw) went two for two in . do min a tin g sty leo ve r- S c 0 tt Strothers. An incredible field of Expert 125cc motorcycle riders were on hand Sunday, as it was also qualifier day for CRGs San Diego Stadium race. Many riders stayed to race the regular CMMC program. Top class had to be the Modi£ieds where Honda mounted, David Hopwood scored a come from behind tie-breaker over Pacific Beach Honda rider, Ken Dunlap. a Results MINICYCLE CLASSES STK EX: 1.
