Donelso, lohr take Intermediate wins at OCIR By Steve Crosby IRVINE, CA, OCT. 14 After a couple of weeks with the track on the damp side of ideal, the riders faced a very dry . racing surface this week at Wheelie whiz Jim Gentile clocked 98 MPH on one wheel at Willow. Second moto's holeshot went to newcomer Tommy Whitfield, out of retirement and pulling away to a big lead on Bob Kutz's 500 thumper. Meanwhile, Sonny and Stacy dueled their way through the pack, reeled Tommy and went around him on both sides in the tum two sweeper. Tommy was bumped heavily in the double pass and barely survived a mean tankslapper. Stacy put the heat on Sonny and pulled his favorite "drive around the outsjde" pass in turn two. Sonny drifted out in a belated block, tangled with Stacy and went down. Akana saved it, but then blew the lead again via an infield crash.. Whitfield slipped by for the second moto win with charging Clin- ton Takara taking second. Akana decisioned the tiebreaker with two thirds, Amano second overall with a 2-4'moto tally, Sonny last of the three way tie with his 1st and 5th. Whitfield added a 6-1 score for 4th overall in his comeback ride. 22 The Open Expert class featured a classic one on one. Current number one Open Expert Stu Whittingham returned from his knee injury only to find Hagi Alexander gunning for the Open Expert gold as well. Their first matchup was at the MX last Sunday, with Hagi's 3-1 mOlOS edged Stu's tying 2-2 score. Open class at the TT, Whittingham wascookin', with holeshots and over the jump passes on Hagi. Stu slid out in a tight and slippery hairpin-left to hand over the tead in the first moto before DNF'ing with a broken chain. . , . • .. f ••• , ... Second moto was another thriller until Stu dropped it in the same snotty 180 degree turn, giving Hagi his third double moto win and Expert overall of the night. Results MINI: 1. Gentile wheelie neat, wheelie fast By Lori Tyson WILLOW SPRINGS, CA, OCT. 24 Jim Gentile doesn't have any prolem getting it up or keeping it up. He does both faster than anyone. Gentile took his turbo-charged Kawasaki 1000 to 98 miles per hour on one wheel to take the win at the AFM's wheelie contest. Each rider was given three tries and their top speed was measured at the end of 1000 feet with a radar gun. Gentile's first run didn't register, as the turbo came on boost and he had.to drop the whe~l. His second run was his fast 98 mph; and the third showed 90 mph. Second place Bob Snowden, riding a GSlOOO Suzuki, did a fast Orange County International Raceway. With the National Hot Rod Association's Winston World Finals going on at the drap strip, and all the commotion and last minute crazies that are created by a large event, the water truck was not available until late in the afternoon and the track did not receive its normal ration of water. But even though the track was on the dry side, there was some very good racing and several of the drag racers paid a visit to motocross to check out the two-wheeled world. In the Pro classes Todd Peterson took the 125cc win over Chris Heinrich and Taylor Marcell. Randy Skinner, returning to the Pro ranks, found himself in the 250cc winner's circle over Mike Tripes and Mark Anderson. In the Open Pro class, Mike Tripes rode his Husky to another win after the starting gate fell on his foot when several riders jumped the gate at the start of the first moto. As sore as his leg was, he would not give up a chance to ride, and Tripes won the first moto in Open and 250cc and finished second in the second moto before heading out for X-rays. The 125cc Intermediate class this week was a mix of regulars plus several riders who normally compete at Ascot. The win this week went to an Ascot rider, Ken Donelso, on his Gardena Kawasaki. In the first moto, 'Bill Clemsop took the holeshot and held off the world, until the last lap, when Mark Saalfeld slipped by to take the checkered flag. Clemson ended up second with Donelso third. In the second moto, Clemson took the holeshot again, but Donelso was right with him and passed him for the lead on the second lap. Also on the second lap, Saalfeld passed jeff Eary for third. That's the way the top three finished with the overall going to Donelso's 3-1. Clemson's 2-2 was second and Saalfeld's 1-3 was third. In 250cc Intermediate Scott Lohr took his ITT Suzuki to a wire-to-wire win in the first moto. Ray Wimmer started in second, but Paul FitzGibbon quickly caught him. Tom Brown moved to third a couple of laps later and Wimmer ended up fourth. In the second moto, Carl Reed, who finished fifth the first time out, grabbed the holeshot and held off all challengers. Wimmer started out in second with Lohr third. On the second lap, Tom Brown moved from fifth up to third and put the pressure on Wimmer. Wimmer held tough and finished second behind Reed, while Brown had to settle for third. Lohr dropped back ~o fifth for awhile behind Dee Tryon. But by the midway point of the moto, Lohr had locked down fourth. Overall Lohr's 1-4 was sufficient for the top spot, while Carl Reed had second with a 5-1. Ray Kresser keeps Oahu Novice win By Ace Reporter NORTH SHORE, OAHU, HA, OCT. 10 Matt Kresser was the hero of the day at Waialee State Motorcycle. Park, playing the role of giant killer in the 250cc Novice class, defeating previously unbeaten Wallace Lee to claim first place, then umping to Amateur class in a backto-back ride to challenge another unbeaten class champ, Robert Valentine. Valentine put Kresser away easily as Kresser unloaded in the first Amateur 250cc moto and was never a threat. The real hero status comes from the offer from Matt's dad - the offer to grade the track for free before the next points race. Mr. Kresser is head of Pacific Construction and not only offered to grade the rough and hazardous track, but also to help repair the HMA grader for future races on the adobe moonscape. The I25cc Novice class was bigger than ever, with a first turn pile-up and late red flag ruining the first lap positions of lace Furuike and Kim Lyman. Kim is the only female motocrosser, and was heartbroken over the loss of position, plus riding the whole lap all-out as the restart nagger mi-ssed the relay signal. Furuike merely pulled another holeshot on the restart, but Kim came off in sixth. joseph Tabisola, who was at the bottom.of the first tum pileup thatcaused the restart, wasted no time in pressuring j ace for the lead. Furuike held up under the pressure this time, and led to the checkered, pulling away slightly from Tabisola. Alan Lee and Thomas Key finished ~hird and fourth after a running battle, with Kim finishing sixth. Second moto .was a repeat, with a Furuike holeshot and Tabisola on his tail. lace has developed some extra strength and survived the expected fade, holding off Tabisola all the way again. Key and Lee went at it again, switching their first moto positions with Key getting the tiebreaker for third overall. In the 125cc Experts, current number two ~ert Uyeda continued his plan to regain his number one rank- . . 'I f
