Bertram aces Jackhammer enduro again By Jim Bowman Photo by Gail Weinert FOUTS SPRINGS, CA, OCT. 24 Cycle Gear/Hi Point/Nelson Bros.-sponsored Dave Bertram, now the top ranked A rider in the nation, continued to main- 24 tain his hold on the District 36 Number One plate today, as he won the Oakland Motorcyle Club's Jackhammer enduro for the second year in a row, turning in an identical one point score. A rain-soaked course under clear skies made the Jackhammer a delightful ride for all 584 entries. More of a timekeeper for the better riders, the event had special tests on the first and . second loops, with the more demanding test being the one on loop two. As .dust was no problem, the riders concentrated on' the their tight-brush and wet-log crossing experience to finish the course. Husqvarna support rider,Bertram finished ahead of Randy Carles (Hus) and Brian Beatie (Hon) to lead the Open A class sweep of the top three overall positions. Carles and Beatie both dropped two points with Carles nudging Beatie by 38 seconds. _ Another D-36 rider who will join the National ranks for 1983, Hi Point! KTM-spOnsored Jeff }-Jenning, lost 2 minutes and 59 seconds to lead the 250cc A class ahead of Greg Ferguson (Yam) and Wayne Smith (Yam). Matt Cullins, yet anotper D-36 rider destined for a National number, won the 200cc A class aboard a Yamaha . IT175J, beating out P. Kirk Ratzel (Suz) and Peter Prichard (Hon). The small-bore Kawasaki ridden by Jim Fleming won overall B class . honors, topping Open B winners Doug Fielding (Hon) and Ron Roberts (KTM). All three riders scored 5 point~, but the surprise is that both Fielding and Roberts were riding fourstrokesl Alan Kellerman topped the 250cc B class by scoring less tiebreaker points than second place Fred Budde (Kaw), who also scored nine points. Probably the biggest winner of the day was Bob Gardner from the California Enduro Riders Association. Gardner'didn't show up in the top 'three of any class, but he did manage to win the Suzuki DRl25 door prize offered by the OMC for the enduro entrants. One of the nicest things about the 1982 Jackhammer was the OMC's change in the course. Last year, two enduros and one poker run were run on much the same course; this was due to the U.S. forestry restrictions on the start and finish. This year, the club used lots of flagman and excellent course markings to weave the riders in and about each other to create a very different course. Word has it that the Richmond Ramblers will be doing the same sort of thing at their Bearfoot enduro in this area on Nov. 21. Results OVERALL: 1. Dave Bertram (Hus); 2. Randy carles (Hus); 3. Benton County Fairgrounds, winning the 250cc A and 250cc Pro I5-lap main events. AMA Junior Jim Torpey (Power Master/Out Front Number Plates/Yam) won a close one in the Open A main over ChuckGlender (KRW/L&M Leathers/Cycle CountTy/Light Racing Products/Hon), who stormed back to take a controversial Open Pro main. Despite a large amount of AMA Pros being lured to San Jose for the short track, the riders and spectators . still came in large numbers to witness Mike Oglesbee (N-D/Maxima/Yam) take the final 250cc B main, which opened up the door for the first.in a series of A mains. The first was the 10 lap 125 A main which started eight riders. At the snap of the rubber band, it was Robbie Blagg (Simpson/Maxima/Yam) and Clay Light (LOP/Super Seer/ Bosch/Out Front Number Plates/ Yam) taking off from where they left in the heat races and trophy dash, leading Donald Paul (Seattle Suz) and Brian Riley (Hon) into turn one. After that, the duo motored, away irom the pack in a royal battle for the lead. At the half, Paul joined the front runners to make it close as the trio hit lappers and gave Light a momentary lead before Blagg repassed. With a lap to go, it was still Blagg, Light and Paul, who took advantage of lapper:s to make a finish line move on Light for second. Riley took fourth and Tim Rickets (Yam of Salem) fifth. Mahr, AMA Novice Mike Moritz (Bul), Blagg (Yam) and AMA Junior Harry Thomas (Suz) led at the start of the 250cc A main event which, unlike many other mains, was good on the first take. Mahr was quick to build up a good-sized lead early in the race until Thomas got by young Blagg to set the stage for a Mahr/Moritz/ Thomas battle thiu had the fans on their feet. Mahr and Moritz got a bit too close and Moritz went down in the shuffle, putting Thomas in second and closing.. Blagg moved into third amidst the mayhem to make up the final finish order of Mahr, Thomas, Blagg, Rick Hill (Bul) and Oglesbee. The Open A main shook Corvallis with the tremors of the 500cc singles as they staged for the IO-Iap slugfest. . Once off the line it was Bret Howard (Specialty Cycles Hon) leading Torpey, Glender and Bruce Turnbull (Corvallis Kaw). Howard stalled it shortly there~fter, putting Torpey into the lead with Glender ramming at his rear wheel. Torpey had the lead a'll the way to the checkered £lag with Glender a wheel away for second. Third went to Dave Vasalaskaus (Hon) followed by Howard and Turnbull. " The next to the last main, and definitely one of. the best, was the 250cc Pro main event, which had Mahr gracin,g the pole position in the 10 rider, two row event. Ed-Byers (Longview Yam) led at thesnap of the band oveJ: Mahr, who was quick to put an opening lap pass on Byers, who went out on the next lap. Moritz and Thomas were out to make it a repeat of 250cc A action, but as before, MAlhr and Moritz got too close. and Moritz again met the silty manure turf, putting Harry in the runner-up spot. Oglesbee also went out in the shuffle for positions and Tom McCallum (Bul) took thildaheadof AMA Novice VerI Smith (Vern's Air Sales/Yam). Mahr, needless to say, took his second main win of the night over Thomas, McCallum, Smith, Moritz and Steve Kendig (Bul '. Howard, Glender and Vasalaskaus led the start,of a 15-lap Open Pro war which had Howard and Glender smoke away from the pack to duke it out. Howard and Glender made contact, forcing Glender to shut off, and the order remained the same until the' last lap when Howard misjudged the flag and pulled off, giving Glender the win over Joe Eaton (Yam of St. Helens) and Torpey. Aldana's acrobatics earn stadium RR win By Mick Krick BAKERSFIELD, CA., OCT. 23 Dave Aldana took his Dallas Baker Racing/A-Trak YZ465 Superbikers mount on a shakedown cruise tonight at Mesa Marin Raceway and put on a show en route to winning the Open GP class at the second Pierte Racing Enterprises, Inc. stadium road race. Heat race winner Aldana followed Rhys Howard and Rich Oliver, bOth on Kawasaki superbikes, into the first turn on the banked half-mile oval, but after the tight infield section, Aldana was the first onto the south banking. He continued to stretch his lead - with wheelies and foot-down dirt track style - to 10+ seconds when the race was red-flagged and called official shortly after the halfway point when Paul Birchfield slid into the turn four wall, tweaking his ankle. That left Supertrapp/ND/COntinental Volvo Oakland/Snow Cleaners Oakland-sponsored Oliver as runnerup while Aldana's teammate Mike Baker treated the course like a motocross, coming up to third after a mediocre start while worrying about his bike seizing again. Honda's Roberto Pietri finished fourth on his Superbikers CR480R with George Gereau taking fifth on ,his Kawasaki triple. Oliver, who won the first Open race here in June, took the Open Super Street contest. Howard closed
