Canacta: Northern California-Northern 'Nevaoa-Oregon-Washington-Idaho-Utah-Alaska-Canada-Northern California-Northern Nevada-Oregon-Wasliington-Idaho-Ut late in the .race, but the 25-lap race wasn't long enough for the effort. Mike Krolick slipped and slid his Moriwaki Kawasaki superbike to third. Birchfield and Gpz-mounted Frank Mazur rode to fourth and fifth. In the 600cc Super Street main, Mazur held off Doug Toland for a while. but finally succumbed, and Toland rode off on his KZ550 for the win. Rhys Howard got a bad start on his Vision, but stuffed his way past Mazur for second a few turns before the white £lag, followed by Jeff Tuttobene on another KZ and Nick Theroux on a Yamaha thumper road racer. The 250cc GP race found Dave Busby taking Ron Wood's Can-Am Superbikers thumper to victory. He diced with early leader Kurt Bickel on a Harry Lillie Can-Am Rotax road racer which was set up for more top end, but Bickel went down in a "body slam" near the halfway mark. Theroux eased into second with Mazur taking third on his Honda Hawk, Dirt Rider Magazine's Mark Kariya on his Kawasaki KX250 MXer holding off Gordy Heavrin on his Can-Am for fourth. Jorgy sweeps San Jose ST Pros By Bill Spencer SAN JOSE, CA, OCT. 23 Repeating his National performance at the Santa Fe National just a few months back, Stockton's Alex Jorgensen rode away with the Santa Clara County Fairgrounds quarter-mile dirt oval Pro short track feature that was part of the Pacific Automotive Exposition. Jorgy's self-prepared Can-Am was awesome, taking the fast time, winning both the heat and semi and, except for a tussle with Team Honda's Scott Pearson, earning a wide margin of victory in the final. It was n'o surprise in the first semi as Jorgensen ran off for the win with the fastest time and the pole for the main. Rich Arnaiz held the second spot throughout, but was challenged in the late laps by Jim Filice, who has been focusing on road racing as of late. Jimbo and John Burnett had a good tussle going in the early laps with the Yamahas exiting the corners in unison, but when Felice got tired of it, it was poetry. Doug Chandler was long gone in the second semi with Don Howard and Dan Bennett doing the dicing for second over Scott Nail, Joe Knight and Sal Hoffman. It looked effortless for the just 17-year-old who started the year as a novice an~ held the top white and red plater in June when the new rule came into effect, allowing him to move to Junior midseason. Chandler nearly has his ·Expert points, but wants to ride Houston's Junior Invitational. Howard finally got the best of the bash with Bennett, who was the only Novice in the main. Coming from the outside of the front row at the start of Semi three was Dave Caballero, holding off Scott Pearson for a lap in a remarkale display on the Bud Martin Valley Cycle Yamaha. Pearson gathered his Bill Campbell prepped Honda together and rode on around and off to the win, taking Eklund and Spencer along for the main, while Caballero took fourth with a fine effort over Walden. Keith Day had the hardest workout of the night in the fourth Semi when he came off the line a little late and had to work around Scott Podergois, Barry Pelkey and Rod Sullivan, who led the early laps. Day took the win on his ND Kawaski after Pelkey got into the act, Sullivan having some . tire sticktion problems. The track remained pure magic for the main with a little cush, a la Houston, on the outside with no discernible blue groove, but a wide groove with room for about three riders. Jorgensen got the good start over Pearson, Day and Howard. Alex set a su per soft Goodyear on that cush line and was off down the back straight in command until Pearson rode the inside line and got by underneath as they exited the fourth corner on the first lap. Pearson out-dragged his Honda to the first turn with Jorgensen still running the high' line. Day and Howard swapped third with Filice and Chandler doing battle just in front of Eklund. Pearson held the lead for two more laps until Jorgensen decided that the long way around just wasn't the hot setup and, as soon as he put the wheel on the low line, he moved up and got right on by Pearson. Lap six belonged to Jorgy's CanAm with Pearson riding to second all on his own. Day had third in a wrap until his carburetor fell askew and he DNF. Chandler found himself the third place critter when Filice got wide off the last corner on lap eight.. Jimbo diced with Eklund until the bike quit down the front straight and Eklund had to do the world famous two-step to avoid the slowing bike. Jim dropped a shift and it came back to life and he worked extra hard the last half, repassing Eklund and putting the move on Howard at the end after Don had lost his rear seat assembly. Eklund settled for the sixth over Pelkey and Rich Arnaiz, who had been running well when the rear tire ate through the rear brake line and caused consternation when the pedal was pushed. Sullivan held ninth over Novice sensation Bennett with both deciding that they hadn't set the tires right; Spencer and Day were already in the pit. Results MAIN: 1. Alex Jorgensen (C-A); 2. Day's day in Monterey By Bill Spencer MONTEREY, CA, OCT. 16 Keith Day and his Salinas Cycle Salvage KX250 did the magic , Jeff Henning won the 250cc A class at the Jackhammer enduro. deed ill the Monterey County Fairgrounds short track crashfest tonight with John Taylor the surprised, but happy Open Expert winner. The fall series runs through the month of October and a very good turn out of both riders and spectators made for an interesting night. While definitely suited for Pee Wees, the combo show with threewheelers and micro midgets gave just enough to keep all enthralled except for the course crashers from the outside. Graham Santiago took top honors in the Pee Wee portion that is also filled with Chisum kids. Jason Chisum smiled his way to the Novice Mini win while Rich Gonzalez was tops in the Junior portion and Tom Carriger proved the kid to beat in both the 80 and lOOcc Expert classes. Jeff Pestana's pop was probably more pumped about the 250cc Novice class win than Jeff .. himself while Dave Drew brought the Harley effort in for second over Phil Priddy. Vance Felicio survived the animai 250cc Junior class over Bob Damron with Craig Johnson doing lots of passing for third after leading the heat before going the other way. Keith Day had to wait for the guys to line up both rows of 250cc Experts before getting the just right start alongside of Bruce Johnsonand Chad Felicio. Keith broadslides this track to the rafters and wall, riding in a fine style that will show a National number for the 1983 Camel Pro series. Keith had the game wired for the distance with only one bad getoff that led to a red £lag. "Taco" Tim Torricellos and Norm McCollough had a good bash in the 500cc Novice main with Tim the winner by a shade. Lee Yetter had the Junior portion to himself while John Taylor was only slightly surprised about his Expert win as the bump and grind left him alone for a change and he won out over Bruce Johnson.
