TEN YEARS BARSTOW TO VEGAS IS COMING! Saturday, November 27th AGO with cooperation from the SCMA chartered VICTOR McLAGLEN MOTOR CORPS and the SILVER CITY SCRAMBLERS Rick Woods went undefeated through five rides to take the U.S. National Speedway Championship at Costa Mesa, CA. Scott Autrey took four of his five events, but a third place in the other left him tied with Mike Bast at 13 points,. Autrey won the run-off to get the nod for second. Steve Bast finished third with Danny Becker fourth. The barrage of Tom Brooks/l 25 DKW wins in the desert came to a temporary halt at the Rams' hare 'n' hound, where Brooks finished third overall behind Jim Fishback (CZ) and Larry Pfutzenreuter (Bul). Up in the Berkshire woods, the AMA hosted an international Two-Day Trials to gain FIM approval for the 1973 ISDE to be hosted in the U.S. There was a full international field, but the winner of the event was American Dave Eames on a 500cc Yankee. First Check - Baker. California (approx. 40 miles from Alvord Rd.) Check in by taking Baker Exit Road to Kelbaker Road (1 st stop sign). Turn right. go past 1-15 on ramp to CYCLE NEWS Check In. (Road Bikes only) The AMA Race of Champions was held on the half mile oval of San Jose's Santa Clara County Fairgrounds, where Harley-Davidson's DaveSehl won thefeatureevent. H-D teammate Mert Lawwill finished second with Yamaha-mounted Chuck Palmgren third. Maico's Ake Jonsson continued his Trans-AMA winning streak by taking the Orlando, FL, round over Husky's Heikki Mikkola. Suzuki's Roger DeCoster had the lead going into the final moto, but crashed twice on the sandy track and finally pulled out, too weary to continue. Arne Kring piloted a Husqvarna to third overall, with Brad Lackey (Kaw) top American at seventh overall, one position ahead of Jim Weinert (Yam). Peter Lamppu won both motos of the 250cc Support class. A few future desert types were trying their hands at closed circuit racing at an NRA motocross at Deadman's Point. Bill Tarling won the 125cc Junior class, and Morgan Malocco was the 250cc Intermediate victor. Preston Gerber won the Firebird 100 desert race in Utah, topping fellow .Open .Experts Lamar Walker and Gatton Guio. It was announced that George Tripes had been named national sales manager for HRL Lubricants. Long associated with motorcycle and automotive racing, Tripes was the father of '72 Superbowl winner Marty. A two-hour GP at 395 Cycle Park in Adelanto saw Steve McNulty take the overall win on a 250 Yamaha, followed by Rick Sieman on a 250 Maico. A storm in Baja forced the rerouting of the NORRA Mexican 1000 offroad race to be run in November. In making the announcement, NORRA head Ed Pearlman said that the course would start in Mexicali and then head west before San Felipe and go south through Camalu and EI Rosario, The orginal course was to have gone straight south through San Felipe and Gonzaga Bay.
