The season-ender at the home of the Padres, Chargers, and Aztecs deserves a spectacular Supercross track! For the first time ever, this track will go into the spectator stands! Designed after the famed Peristyle Jump, this new section is called the "Wran~ler CorraU" Riders will launch from the stadium floor, climbing up three seating levels into a sharp right-hand turn that spits them onto the concourse under the scoreboard. They'll hammer over double one-and twofoot dirt mounds; swing another right; and fly off the Coca-Cola Catapult, a flat ridge, for a thrilling free-fall return to the ground! .,' "Wrangler Corral" is only one of nearly a dozen obstacles the nation's best Supercrossers must conquer at the MILLER HIGH LIFE SUPERCROSS FINALS. This awesome race course boasts whoop-de-doos, berms, ramps, peaks, sandpits, straightaways, and a 10-foot chunk of real estate called the "Miller Mountain!" On Nov. 6, 80 skilled Supercross racers will pit their 250cc machines against a treacherous man-made track-and against each other-at the final showdown. This race means more than just the last race of the year. It is a final test; the last chance to prove to friends, fans, teammates, and managers how good they really are at the sport of Supercross. The 1982 Supercross Championship was clinched by Honda's Donnie "Holeshot" Hansen at the Los Angeles Miller High Life Superbowl of Motocross in July; and although Suzuki's Mark Barnett is untoucha- . ble in second place; 78 other Supercrossers will jockey for position at San Diego. Contract negotiations for 1983 are already underway, and many privateers are hoping to fall under the watchful eyes of factory team scouts and managers. Riders currently under contract need a good finish to secure their positions. The final Wrangler Supercross points tally wi II go on record forever a t the end of Saturday night's racing. Super champipns .. Danny "Magoo" Chandler, Johnny O'Mara, Jim Gibson, and David Ba~ ley will lead the force of Team Honda for their final stadium ride of the year. The last Supercross points battle will unfold as teammates O'Mara and Gibson both set their sights on capturing the third place finish in the series. O'Mara leads with a 15-point jump on Gibson; but with a total of 28 points possible, Gibson could easily slide into third. He finished second at San Diego last year, and there will be no holding back for either Gibson or O'Mara. Both are riding hot, and the race for third is fair game, Muscle from Yamaha's powerhouse, Mike Bell, Broc Glover, and Rick Johnson won't lighten the load. "Too Tall" Bell, reigning champion of the "Last Superbowl," took his win with ease. Local San Diego favorite, Broc Glover, was not happy taking second place in L.A" and will be going after back-to-back victories to match last year's win in his hometown stadium. Teammate Rick Johnson and former 125 and 500cc champ, Marty Smith, join Glover to form the traditional Team San Diego at the Supercross finals, Behind the leadership of threetime 125cc National Champion, Mark Barnett; Suzuki's star line-up includes Warren Reid, George Holland, and Denny Bentley, Also chalking up points for the final tally will be Kawasaki's Jeff Ward, Goat Breker, and Tom Benolkin, From mid-July 'til Nov, 6, there are no stadium races. Many riders contest the outdoor motocross races in the United States and Europe. Others practice or enter local events; but nobody can practice Supercross. Saturday afternoon before the Finals will be the first stadium course these riders have seen since the L.A. Super.bowl---and the very first course they've ever ridden into the stands at Jack Murphy Stadium! voted on by the news media and riders and mechanics themselves; the "Rider of the Year" has been selected in cooperation with Motocross Action by subscribers of Dirt Bike and Motocross Action magazines.
