Thanks from Robbins Just a note of thanks to the off roaders of California for their help and support of my SB 2056 which would have restored the $8.5 million "borrowed" from the Off-Highway Vehicle Fund this year. The raid of . the OHV Fund was bad enough, but the refusal to pay it back or even acknowledge the $8.5 million as a loan is an outrage. SB 2056 il1 its original form did not pass the Assembly Fiscal Committee. We were able to salvage the provisions, however, that will allow for an OHV Fair at Hungry Valley next year, so it was not a total loss. I promise you that part of the first order of business on my legislative schedule next year is the reintroduction of a bill that will restore the $8.5 million to the OHV Fund and to insure that no more raids on this fund take place. My best regards. ALAN ROBBINS State Senator 20th District Alan Robbins created legislation for Hungry ValleySVRA in 1976...Editor. Herndon helpers Now that the Winston Pro Series season is over, I would like to take this opportunity to thank some of the people who were backing my program this year. Of course to begin with, I would like to thank my parents for their ·support throughout the years. I would also like to thank: ava Helmets, Works Performance. Shocks, Jemco and Two Wheel World for their backing. Plus, a very special thanks to Mike Kidd for the encouragement and coaching he's given me for the past three years. Also, the same to Terry Poovey, Tex Peel and Ken Parker for their help at the end of the season: And thanks to my mechanic, Tom Aylfett, for his work throughout the 1982 season. BILL HERNDON #IIN Euless, TX Frontier 500, just once We don't want to appear nit-picky, but after spending a load of dough as one of the sponsors of David Wasden/Mike Mukonery in the Frontier 500, we would appreciate seeing our company name correctly printed at least once in reference to this event. Please note, it was misprinted in the official program also. It should read P Be G Equipment Rentals Inc. PAT GRIFFIN Rosemead, CA Grandma Duckbacker speaks The Phantom Duck of the Desert has never lost a single point with the BLM, but he has been denigrated and defamed by the very people he has been working for, these last eight years or more. . Just a couple of points for clarification: first, The Barstow to Vegas race would never have been lost if District 37 and the AMA had gotten involved -in the law suit before one year ago. Secondly, District 37 is assisting the BLM in preventing the ORVers from enjoying the land by physically helping with land closures. Example: District 37 was at Shadow Mountain handing out literature for closure of the area on the July 4 weekend. We need to establish exactly who is helping us off-highway users to continue to enjoy the desert and other assorted areas. The Phantom Duck has never knuckled under to the blackma{ltactics, threats or law suits of the BLM. Yes, I'm extremely angry at my fellow motorcyclists in particular, ·and all off-highway users in general. Fully understanding that these folks are individualists and very proud of not being joiners, for the most part, I'm angry that the Phantom Duck is $7,000 in debt for legal fees (we must change that) and I'm angry that Louis McKey has hada minimum of $ 10,000 of out of pocket expenses because of lack of financial support. I'm also angry that Louis McKey has no time to solicit donations because he also has a full time·job, a family to see occasionally and I'm also angry that he doesn't even have time to enjoy a little recreation himself by riding his motorcycle. He's usually answering mail, meeting with his attorney or BLM officials, or attending the landuse hearings. But Louis McKey has never given up. Single handedly, the PDOD has won on the issue of opening the Clark Mountains. Remember 1979? That was when the barricades, signs and BLM Rangers were posted. The PDOD has had two decisions handed down from the ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, clarifying our right to travel through the Clarks. ~ The BLM mu t have been impressed by the 1981 B to V Trail Ride because so many folks turned out (from Alaska to New York) in spite of the inclement weather. Over 100 dirt bikes were there and rode the majority of the way in the rain, sleet and snow. I hear Louis McKey was confronted by Alden Severs (Barstow Resource Mgr. of BLM) regarding the safety of the Trail Rides. Louis conceded that the trail needed to be marked and the entire event organized, however, under . penalty of lawsuit, Louis cannot promote or organize it. All he tan do is go out and ride Thanksgiving weekend as his protest and hope, just like the rest of us, that he doesn't get lost or hurt. This year is the eighth annual unorganized T~il Ride and I'm personally willing to exceed that number. Also I'm willing to continue writing my check on the first of each month, for PDOD Legal DefenSe Fund, because he is the only person that will continue this fight to the end, or at least to the end of his resources. Remember folks the proposed Ba stow to Vegas race, projected for 1985 would never have been proposed at all, if the Phantom Duck Trail ride had not taken place each Thanksgiving weekend since 1975. We owe Louis McKey a great deal but mainly we owe it to him to help financially, since he is doing this for all of us woo enjoy riding and playing in thedesert and open lands. Please help him continue helping us, by sendmg a buck or two or even $10 to: Phantom Dud Legal Defense Fund, 7896 Kempster Ave., Fontana, CA. 92335. Please I'm begging you to help the Duck to continue our fight agaidit the BLM and big brother. I hope to see many friends again on Nov. 27.
