And much to the delight of any racing fa n, the racing was superb in every class. T he racing got under way with the Veteran Ex p ert s. Bruce Sas s, ridin g a Yamaha, finish ed first in both motos, giving him undisputed possession of first pl ace. Bru ce was chased by Cha rles Geist , who finished second in both motos on a Honda. Third p lace was captur~d by Glade Hi ll. In th e 250cc Expert cla ss, Stacy Cook (H on) took the overall with a first place fin ish in moto number one and second in moto two. Stacy was chased all day by Randy Warr en on h is Kawasa ki. Randy too k second p lace overall by finishing fift h in the fir st moto and then racin g to firs t p lace in the second moto. Mike Fr iend (H on) took third overall with two third place efforts. Rick Mo n ks was the 250cc Amateur winner on a Honda. R ick finished 2-3 in the two motos for first overall. Kirk Seiverso n (H on) took second place; taking the first rac e outright and fin ish in g the second ra ce in fou rth place. Third place overall was taken by Jose Goday on a Honda. In the 125cc Experts, a superb rider named Albert Firestine rod e h is Yamaha to a first overall with some dazzling racing. Firestin e finished first in the first moto and second in the last race. Albert was closel y cha llenged all day by Mark Flesia ridi ng another Yama ha . Mark fin ished 2-4. Both Al bert and Ma rk were chased by Ma tt Lindsay riding a Kawa saki. Ma tt raced to a 5-3 for an overall th ird . In th e O pe n Expert class, the race went to th e wire in both motos. T h e gutsy riding of Arlo Eng lund and Bob o Sti ch ter was almost beyond beli ef. These two riders went tire to ti re in both races, with on ly seconds separa tin g them. Englund came o ut th e wi n n er on his Yamaha by ri di ng to a second p lace finish in the first moto and th en beating Bobo out in the last few yards in the seco nd ra ce for th e victory. Co leman, Logston, Perrero at Carlsbad MX By Ly nda Torrez CARLSBAD , N M, SE PT. 19 Hobbs, NM, rider Kyle Coleman took h is Yamahas to zhe ) winner's circle in the highly competitive 125 and 250cc Intermediate classes. Good starts and smooth riding were th e key to Kyle's success. Another rider wi th th e same key was Monty Ra ndell (Yam ) who holeshot both 125cc Novice motos a nd ran away with them. In the money classes, Kawasaki supported Scott Logsto n showed he was the man to beat, winning three out of four rnotos. Shaun Perrero on Hondas seemed to be th e only rider who could keep Scott in sight in the 125 a nd 250cc Exper t classes. In the second 250cc moto, he kep t Scott beh in d him the whole race. The two riders were side by side a couple of times, but Shaun shut th e door and kept the lead. A last chance try saw Scott bezerk the finish line jump , making for a p hoto finish . H ensley sta rte d in the middle of the pack, bu t worked his way up in the line. The track was muddy and crowded, but he was determined to get ahead of the Kansas City riders. Craig H igh t took first in th e 250cc Junior class riding a Suzuki. There were lots of sp ills along th e way. The track was muddy, due to three da ys of rain before the race , but it didn 't seem to bother any of the riders. Jerry Post captured the title in the 250cc Senior bracket. Post just turned 16 years old and is making h is way u p to being an Expert. He has been ridin g a bike since he was seven yea rs o ld. H e can ri de on almost any track and take a trophy home. Post had a lot of competition in this race, Bria n North was riding on his back whe el all the way, th ere were times when Po st would fall bac k on th e tigh t turns, but he wo u ld come back harder than- ever. T here was a larg e gro u p of ri ders from Kansas and Okla. to compete in this motocross race.
