Friend, Olson win Watertown Fall Classic By Brian George WATERTOWN, SD, SEPT. 12 Honda-mounted Mike Friend, Dave Molder, and Kelly Olson all took their firey red machines to overall victories in the 125, well-prepped Tulsa Motocross Track. Racing in the 250cc Novice class was wild as Rex Jump (Yam) " j u m p ed" into the lead in moto one for a wire-to-wire win. Page Keck (H o n) hotly pursued Jump for second while Steve Blockcolski (Ma i) circuited the course for third slot. Todd Umbarger (Kaw) started poorly, but worked his way through the pack to briefly snatch fourth from Brad Harter (Yam). Harter was not to be denied and throttled past Umbarger on the last lap. Second mow action saw Keck stranded at the starting gate with a dead bike as an inspired Umbarger nailed his throttle and blasted into the lead, never to be. headed to the checkered flag. Jump and Blockcolski heatedly diced for second place with Jump holding ' ori to capture the overall with a 1-2 day. Blockcolski was surprised on the last lap as Bill Houston (Suz), who DNF the first race, worked his way up from last to snag third place, sixth overall. Blockcolski took third overall with Harter and Keck finishing fourth and fifth respectively. Combined Experts were treated to a two mow view of Doug Fellers' (Kaw ) rear fender as he holeshot both motos for wire-to-wire wins. However, Fellers was unaware of the potential storm that brewed behind him. After a brief layoff from racing, Clay Coss (Mai) returned to action and made his first ever appearance on an Open class bike. After gating third in the first moto, Coss looked very fast as he blasted his Maico past Tim Lewis (Yam) and began reeling in Fellers rapidly. A hidden hole literally dashed his hopes of catching Fellers as he crashed heavily. Lewis held second and Alan Burton (Suz) worked his way through the pack to garner third spot. Second moto action saw Coss gate ' third again, only this time behind second place Ron Hendryx (Suz) , Hendryx hung on for life as Coss doggedly hounded him trying to find the smallest opening. Finally, on the fifth lap, Coss made his move to the outside of a tight hairpin only to have Hendryx 'drift wide and slam the door. The resulting collision left the hapless Coss with a stalled bike and a disappointingday. Hendryx held his position to capture a well-earned second overall for the day. Third overall went to Burton with a consistent 3-3 day. Tim Lewis and Joe Ge enen (Yam ) rounded out the top five with steady rides. 250cc and Open Pro classes, respectively, today at round four of th e South Dakota Fall Classic Motocross Series at Watertown. Some 100 riders braved the off-season weather to compete for points and prizes in the semifinal race of th e last series for the state in 1982. It rained th e en tire previous da y and fog turned to mist today with gusting winds that kept temperatures down in the 50 and 60-degree range for the afternoon's action. The Coteau Hills Cycle Club decided to run th e race course backwards for the event, but with the gumbo mud formed, riders were in unfamiliar territory as it was. First out of the gate were the 500cc Pros and Kelly Olson continued his overall romp on the field. On the opening lap, Olson shot out into the lead and never looked back, as Kevin Poole, Greg Chicoine and Mike Schurman rolled in behind at the end of the mota. Round two saw Poole grab the holeshot, but Olson again took control and set a blistering pace to th e flag that earned him the mota and overall win for the afternoon. Chicoine managed to pull into second ahead of Poole and Schurman by the end, which wound up the overall order as well. Next off were the 125cc Pros and Yamaha-mounted Todd Gikling took the holeshot and early lead with Mike Friend, Shannon Ivey, Curt Hyde and David Henry in tow. Ivey briefly took over second in the first few corners, but Friend came right back to regain the runner-up slot and move up to battle with Gikling the remainder of the first lap. As in the previous round, Gikling's YZ seized up tight and Friend rolled off with the mota win. Henry , in the meantime, picked his way up to second ahead of Ivey, and made the pass stick to the wire. Hyde was fourth. Friend grabbed the holeshot in round two of the 125s, with Henry, Ivey, and Hyde right at his fende r. Within two laps, Friend had a comfortable lead built up and rode all th e wa y to th e flag for the mota and overall. Behind, Ivey washed out in a section of slick mud, which allowed Hyde to sli p into third behind Henry, which is how th ey finished behind Friend in th e mota and final tallies for th e class payback. • Results Results PEEWEE: 1.
