Jim Cox leads M ike Williams &
Slim Stephens at Las Vegas;
Theraux for third place was heating
up into a real shoot out.Third place
changed hands in almost every corner
with o ne bike havi ng a bra king advantage, the ot her having better torque
out of a turn and the third having a
little extra top end.
After McAvoy pulled off with a
blown magneto, Kurt Sager took th e
lead with second place 'n o where in
sigh t. The pass and repass battle had
taken its LOll, slowing all three riders
a n d allowing Jim Brandt to p u ll th e
group in.
When Brandt made an outside pass
on all three of them in turn I I , the
action really picked up, making th e
previous lap's look like a Sunda y rid e.
Every man strained to get an edge on
the others, and when th e smok e
cleared , Theraux and Brandt m a n aged to get a few bikel engths of breathing room on Mark and Allen Yarrow.
Wh en the white Ilag ca rne o u t Kurt
Sager was in th e lead with a large
margin on Theraux, who was being
chased by Brandt. Brandt mad e one
last pass attempt befor e th e chec kers,
but it didn't stick. The race ended
with Sager first , Theraux in seco n d
on his Donsco/Quaker State Yamaha,
and Brandt in th ird. Mark a nd Allen
Yarrow took fourth and fift h respectivel y.

came from a mi dpack start to finish a
close second. Ken Klein was third and
Bryan Wargo fourth :
After a poor start in the first moto
that only allowed him to finish seventh, Dave Wood used one of his patented holeshots for moto two. Mike
Reim ers pulled his Honda in behind
Wood's Yamaha. Mike Wenzel's R M
was third and McKenna's Yamaha
fourth. M c Kenna methodicall y
worked h is way by Wenzel first and
then Reim ers. By lap three he had his
sights set on Wood.
At th e white flag, McKenna had
moved to within striking distance of
Wood. Then with only two turns to
go, Wood 's " g ua ra n teed unbreak- ,
a ble " bars broke. The throttle side
snapped, nearly sen ding Wood 'into
the ch ain lin k fence. " I saw that fence
and decided to jump to the inside of
the track," Wood related after the
race. Wood obviously DNF.
_
McKenna motored by the checkered for the win and the overall. Mike
Wenzel was second, but D F the first
moto and was out of th e overa ll. Jodry
was third for second overall, Ra n d y
. Kerslake co m bined two sixth place
fin ishe s for third overall and Randy
L osh put h is Mai co into fo urth for
fourth overal l.
In the Powder Puff ra ce J ean ie
Mor gan was first overall in th e Expert

Ma ico . Melodye Al icea took home
th e No vice trophy o n her Kawasaki.
Klaudt made it look easy once again
with his full throttle, yet very sm oo th
riding style a nd wr apped up th e
moto over Jacobson, wh o h eld off a
charge from Moen. Fourth went to
Stan Lund (T a co m a Kaw ) who
grabbed a pi ece of th e cash after holdin g David H enden Jr. (Ya m) off to
th e flag.
The second outing had Klaudt and
J acobson lead th e battle aga in, pulling ahead of Moen, Lund and Ro n
Halvorson (Hon). Leader Klaudt gav e
everyone a lesson in th e agony of
defeat, beating Jacobson and Moen
by a good margin; all three are excellent sand riders and proved no match
for fou rth place L und and Ha lverso n.
