Oftis Lance day at PIR RR By John Burrus Photo by Bill Enzweiler PHOENIX, AZ, SEPT. 26 Today was a real cactus boiler at P h oeni x International Raceway, and the scooter wars sponsored by Phoenix Road Racing Organization more than matched the 100 plus temperatures. In the early practice rounds, Jerry Cline on his 1100 Suzuki and Norm Benedum on his early model 750 Honda looked like the G P class riders to beat, but then a personable young gentlemen visiting from Texas and new to road racing - would you believe his second race - became a terror on the asphalt. Ortis Lance riding a sligh tly modified 1000 Suzuki (with wire wheels, yet) absolutely dominated all four heats. He made it look easy, getting three or four seconds ahead on the first lap, then maintaining that lead. The only exception was the first heat, when Jerry Cli ne jumped in front and held a narrow lead for a . couple of laps. From then on, it was , Lance all the way . The first a nd third races had G P and Box Stock bikes on the track at the same time, th ough wi th a delayed start for the .stockers. Super St reet classes in the other two heats used the sa me format, wi th the slower bi kes starting half a lap later. Needless to say, by the time th e competitors were well into the race, the m ix prod uced so me very in teresting sit uatio ns. T he only bad mi sh ap, though, occurred in the third h eat. Do rrance, riding a Box Stock 1100 Suzu ki, lost it in a turn. The race announcer said he was conscious and had only some lacerations, but it was worth a trip to the nearest medical outlet. That complicated the situation a little, because one of the spectators had earlier collapsed from a heat stroke, and Dorrance took the last available ambulance. When a backup unit arrived 20 minutes later, the third heat was restarted and shortened to five laps: Lance won it handily followed by Pat Palmer on a 750 Kawasaki and Brian O 'Neill on a little 350 Yamaha. The fourth race was Ottis Lance day again, and he picked up 18 points on the event. Results GRA N PRIX: 1. Ott is Lance (Suz); 2. Pat Palmer (Kaw); 3. Frank Sorte lli (M-G). BOX STK 410·560: 1. Woll" whips Topanga , rial T By Curt Fesler TOPANGA CANYON, CA, SEPT. 25 This month's Valley Observed Trials Enthusiasts (VOTE) club trial was put on by Mike "Topanga Fame" Stramat and the Hicklin brothers. They set up 10 challenging sections: tWO loops that included a lot of steep hillclimbs with off-camber turns and others carpeted with thick layers of vines and dry leaves . What they didn't bank on was a day of steady rain that turned it all into a slippery, slimy mess. The cleanable, challenging sections turned into treacherous unforgiving obstacles. The traction varied from zero to max a n u mber of times within a section wh ich made for a few spectacular spills. Da bs were handed out wholesa le and riders seemed to take every opportuni ty to dismount and wa llow in the m ud. T he Ama teu r'class was dominated by Denny " Keko" Wollff on a Bu ltaco. Keko showed h ow it was done by registering cleans on sections of world class caliber. His closest competitor was G reg Pap azian on an SWM, 22 da bs behi nd. Greg chased Keko th roughout the day, but took too many fives on the slippery hill sections to catch up. Joe Grenctus waltzed his Bultaco to an impressive third. The Novice class was captured by Reyn old Hicklin on his new Fantic. The Fantic is only 212ccs but it seemed to glide Reynold 's 230 pound frame up steep, slippery grades like a 500 thumper. Reynold 's beautiful fiance was on hand at each section providing his moral support and distracting other riders. The combination proved LOO much for second place Novice finisher Reec e Fesler on his Montesa 200. Reece had some impressive rides that brought cheers from the gallery, but he ended up nine dabs behind at the finish. With a multitude of excuses, the four remaining Novices failed to finish . First place Begin ner went to Malory Hicklin on a hand me down Suzuki. Curt Fesler struggled LO seco nd on an SWM a nd first ti me rider Jeff Mabbu tt took third on a 250 Bu lt aco . J esse J ames, Pee Wee wi ld rider, terrorized the pack tonight, the last Friday night of the Ca li fornia Racin g Club's summer season, and racked up an impressive pair of back-to-back wins aboard his trusty R&D Racing Yamaha. Throughout both motos , James held Damon Huffman and Jeff Willott under the gun. When the night'S action drew LO an end, James captured the gold, Huffman cinched second place and Willott took home third overall. All three lads prepared for a showdown at San Diego Stadium. Doug Allen (Yam ) burned up the turf in the 80cc SLOck Beginner contest. Tying up a back-to-hack win in one of the tightest races of the night. A large field blasted out of the gate for the first round, with Allen establishing an early lead. He found Burbank Yamaha entry Randy Moseley riding shotgun, Davy Larson holding third and Jody Tapia, at the helm of a cool, green Kawasaki, in fourth and pressing hard. Tapia had a ba ttle on his hands simply holding fourth with Gary Hard's Honda side by side from one end of the course LO the other. When the finish line loomed into sight, Allen led the way, Mose ley followed suit in second and Tapia sneaked into third. Their final encounter of the night saw Allen in command with brilliant rides by Moseley in second and T api a once again in third. Results PEE W EE: 1. J esse Ja mes (Yam); 2. Charters, Carrasco charge to Corona MX victories By Kit Palmer CORONA, CA, SEPT. 24 Tonight at Corona Raceway, as usual, there were many riders who signed up in the 125cc Beginner class to do battle. Two divisions were formed to compensate for the overabundance of racers. And by night's end, both Robert Charters (Suz) and Leo Carrasco (Suz) emerged with a victory. . In the first moto of division one, it was R ick La ne (Suz) who stole the moto wi n away from Charters. La ne watche d Charters' every move me n t for th ree la ps, the n saw h is chance and went for it, passing Charters whe n the leader left a hole in his defe nses . At the same time, Da vid Speer (Yam) inherited third spot when Mike Smith (Yam) drop ped out of the action. Lane went on to take the win followed by Charters, Speer, Eddie Orton (Suz) and Keith Para mo (S u z), Moto two was much the same as the first, but Charters maintained, this time, a flawless defense, holding back Lane for the wi n and overall. Tony Wright (Ya m) cruised to a seco nd round thi rd while O rt on took fourth. Leo Carrasco, alt hough h e didn't even win a rno to, walked away with the go ld in division tWO wi th a consistent 2-3 tally. It was Bobby Pina (Yam) who led from start to finish in the first moto, but a second moto DNF diminished his chances at the overall. Second went LO Eber ahead of Carrasco, Tracy Laye (Hon) and Bruce Miller (Hon ). Chuck Collins (Suz), who trailed a hot second before falling and dropping back LO l l th in the first moto, made up for it in the second by capturing the win in front of Carrasco, Eber and Steve Berg (Yam). Eber's 2-4 combo was good enough for second while Tracy Lave's 4-3 earning gave him third. Results 60 PEE WEE: 1. Dan Brecht ez (Yam); 2. Bobby Mo on (Yam); 3. Dan Bolon (Yam). 60 PEE W EE: 1.
