Faria, Chrisco wound up as Costa esa winds down By Ken Kellogg COSTA, MESA, CA, OCT. 1 Tonight was the last ch ance for many of the ri ders to win one, or ano ther one in '82, so many rode their hardest race of of the year. The m ost important race of th e night was the feature ma tch race. This race is usually run for th e entertainment of the fans only, bu t tonight it was a four lap run-off between Dave DeTem p le and Bob McLain to see who wou ld be the first reserve for the Oct. 9 U.S. Na tional Ch ampion ships. Wh en the gate went up it was DeTemple in tum one first with McLain not far behind. On lap two DeTemple widened his lead a nd Mc Lain was n ever able to ca tch up. So it will be DeT em p le as first reserve and McLain second. T he Jun io r main wa s quite a show as these J u nior Pros rac ed with every bit as much energy as the First Division riders . G reg Hancock was first, Jesse Fin ch second , J orda n Duncan third and David Busby fourth . The Third Division main was won by 10-yard -l in er Rand y Bel vin s. Randy wa s in th e num ber two spot for the first lap and on lap two he took over th e lead from Rick Vanderham. Ken H ansen , who began the race in the third place position, ended in a disappointing fifth place. Mark Weaver finished h is season with a third pl ace win. . Leading from start to fini sh in the Second Division main was Wayne Leutz, Finishing right behind Le utz was favorite Mark Dwyer. Finishing third after passing Alan Davi dson was Chris Reichard t; fourth was Gre g Ayers. Kurt Strommer took the Handicap main lead for the first two laps before Keith Chrisco finally worked his way under and past. By the time Strornrner regained h is composure, it was the end of the lap and he was in fourth place. Shawn McConnell finis hed second riding from the number four position wi th Mike Faria finishing third and Strom mer fourth. The Scratch main was th e last regular season race for '82 and was rea lly quite anti-climatic. Mike Faria took the gate, the lead and the win. Finish ing second was Dubb Ferrell, who came out second from the sandwich position, lane three to challenge Fari a. John " give 'em a show" Cook went out and the master of the gate-shot, Mike Bast finished third. Saturday Oct. 9 the U.S . Randy Blevens; 2. Rick Vanderham; 3. Mark Wuver. Shamrocks had 31.7-mile course laid ou t for 119 teams and 64 Ironmen to enjoy. There was nothing but praise for this race and the course that was described as a rid er's course. It was Tom Eli as off the line lik e a bullet, but at the bomb it was Dan Smith (H us) with th e lead. Kelly was back at 12th aft er the bomb run. At check two Smith had opened up a good lead , while Kell y had worked his way up to second. Lee Scheffers (H on) was third with Ironman Darren Pritchett first 250cc at fourth. . After one loop, Smith had a 50 second lead when his partner Chris Crandall took over . Kelly hit a rock coming into the pits and p u t a hole in his sidecase, losing all his oil. H e was ab le to make it into the pits with out losin g any positions for h is partner Dan Ashcraft. Scheffers was in for third and an anxious Chuck Stearns was ready to take over . !ronman Pri tchett was still running first 250cc bu t being chased by the Mattox brothers, also 250cc riders. T he leader Crandall was havin g his troubles as he got a fla t and by the time he go t to check two on the second loo p Ashcraft had the lead . Kelly was able to keep th e lead with little or no trouble on the third loop and at the fin ish it was teammat e Ashcraft in for the overall win. These two desert aces both had a gr eat ride today. They also ha d a great friend Bu tch Sm ith (Dan Sm ith 's dad) had helped them with the ir fin ish toda y. Befor e the race Ashc raft was in need of a cylin der hea d, so Bu tch gave him the head off his bike. When Kell y pu t the hole in h is sidecase it was Butch th ere to help. Ashcraft also wanted to thank his sponsors Husqvama, Husky Products, Bel-Ray, Scott USA, Champio n Sp ark Pl ugs and Pro Circuit. Second was th e team- of Scheffers and Steams both stating the y had a good ride and enjoyed the course. Third overall and first 250cc was th e hard riding team of H oward McCasland and Ed P ierce J r. The Mattox brothers came in for the fourth overall and second 25Occ. In the C bike battle, Tom Elias and T im Sin clair took home the win with Mike Sixbery and Jim Ma ttox takin g second. Seventh overall was the Amateur/ Expe"rt team of Ken Ovia tt and Ph il Cloward who had a grea t ride today. Eighth was anoth er 250cc team of Doug Winchell and Steve Webb . In for n inth was th e C bi ke team of Duane Summers and Scot t Atch ison. Rounding out th e top 10 was the first O pe n Vet team of Charters and Ellis. T aking the runner-up spot were Da vid Sweeney and Mark Force. T he 250cc Amateur class win went to Andy Mathews and Bryan Statham with Kurt Mann and John Reed a second. Rick Price and Ol iver Rathlein rod e a hard race a nd earn ed a first in the Open Amateur class with another pair of speedsters Shuler and Benn ington taking second. Doing some fin e riding tod ay in the Open Senior class were Morris Norman and Art Knapp, taking th e win. The 250cc Vet class was won by class riders, Russ Jones and Monte Lee. In th e Novice race it was 250cc riders Brett Shaner and Fred Frenzel taking the overall win. Secon d was another team of hard riding Novices, Tim and Dan Seagondollar, ridin g out of Ap ple Vall ey Cycle. Third were Bruce Mortensen and Scott H enderson. Eddy wins D-38 Veteran's Hare Scrambles By Loretta Pipkin IMPE R IAL, CA, SEPT. 26 Paul Eddy (Kearney Mesa Y am l Malcolm Smith) romped his 250cc Yamaha to the overall WIn today in D-38 Veteran's ~ V ..0 o .-.J U o Hare Scram bles. The race started in two waves a mi nute apart. The riders were fanned out in a mad dash for the nonexistent smoke bomb now disguised as the first check. Craig Corda led the pack with Dale Stevenson, Leon Livingsto n, Marty Tripes, Paul Eddy and Ed Foland following. At the third check on lap two , Corda's fire went out and you could see him dejected over the black box as he took it to the barn . Edd y moved into the lead and never let it go . Tripes was a short m inute behind him into th e thi rd loop, followed by Livingston, Fola nd and T err y Strauwald. At th e rock house Tripes faded. " I was just too tired," said Marty la ter, "tired makes for m istakes and mistakes can ruin ya." Tripes ha d driven in at 3 a.m. aft er competing in an off road race a t Barstow, CA. At the end of the th ird loo p, Li vingsto n was a minu te beh in d Eddy. Third and fourth place was a ha ir rai ser between number one and two I25cc pl a te holders Foland an d Strauwald. Strauwald bit it as he was coming do wn the soft hill , ridin g Foland 's fender, but was up af ter Foland before you could blink. Fol and cranked up the green ma chine a notch , keeping Strauwald on th e edge to the end. Mo ving into the Ama teur ranks were Jamie Tucker and Robbie P ippin. They were dicing with Bob Bell and Pa t Lowerie till Pippin siezed and Tucker pu t some distance o n th em. T ucker brought home the class win with Bell a hard ru n second. P ippin go t th e Reams/Maynard award for wanting to ride. Someon e told h im he could use an o ther bike and off he went on a ride that was fun, but earned no points. Into the I25cc No vice win slid Dick Bird's young son John. Old Dad p icked u p second Amateur Senior behind H al Graves. Mama Bird is a class y lady, smoothing her brood 's feathers and cheering th em on .
