< eu;;;;;;;;rj;;tii;.;..·s.utbern e Tripes doubles at OCIR By Steve Crosby IR VINE , CA, SEPT. 9 With the start of school looming imminent, there is still a mid-week escape at Orange County International Raceway motocross. The escapees turned out in force after a gloomy week to work out their frustrations in the dirt. Mike Tripes was the big winner of the night, claiming first place in both the 250 and Open Pro ranks. Taylor Marcell pocketed the biggest share of the 125cc Pro purse. . In the first 250cc Pro rnoto, Tripes wrestled the early lead from Tamm Racing's Jim Brodie. Brodie then slipped back to third behind Rob Trone. A lap later, Brodie moved back into second and set out after Tripes, but could not catch him. In the second rnoto, Rob Trone took the holeshot over Brodie and Tripes. On the second lap, Brodie forced his way into the lead , and Tripes moved into second. Trone settled into third place, while Tripes and Brodie diced for the lead. After a couple of laps, Tripes emerged on top and held off Brodie for the remainder of the race. hi Open Pro, Tripes had to work his way past Scott Cavness and Richie Collins from a third place start; that took him most of the moto. In the second moto, Collins again took the holeshot with Tripes in second. By the midway point, Tripes had the lead, and Collins settled for second overall with a 2-2 score. Jeff Conlin used a 4-3 for third place. There were two divisions of the 250cc Beginners this week with Chris Pillow and Greg Johns taking the top spots. Pillow used a 1-2 on his Suzuki to nudge out Glenn Daunch's Honda, which ran 3-1. John Goethals was the other front-runner. He ended up third with a 2-3. In the second division it was the story of one good ride and one bad ride. Eric Ewers won the first moto, but could manage no better than fifth in the second. Peter Allison rode his Maico to the second moto victory, but had a seventh the first time around. So the overall ended .up with Greg Johns who used a 3-2 on his Maico over Corey 'G ash 's 2-3. Gash was second overall and Ewers ended up with the third place trophy. . Results 60 BEG: 1. Brandon Sperling (Yam); 2. Shane Good (Yam). . '. 60 INT: 1. Matt Foster (Yam). 60 EX: 1. Denis devastates Barona Minis By Rod Eschenburg BARONA, CA, SEPT. 5 Team Kawasaki rider Paul Denis parlayed five firsts and a flat-tire second into a sweep of the top Mini classes at the Labor Day Barona Oaks Motocross . race meet. Denis ripped both the Stock and 105cc Minis four 'straigh t and . was only deprived of a clean sweep by a flat tire in the second rnoto of the Modified Minis. It was the largest field of Experts at Barona in many months, and Denis certainly showed why he carries the NMA number one as he was in command throughout the day; even with the flat! New Expert John Conney (Suz/R&D) was Denis' only real competition with "AJ" coming up with seconds in the 105's and the Modified Experts. In Intermediate Mini action , the Stock Minis saw Mike Allen (Suz) return to his former Novice style as he scored a come from behind win over Space Schriner. Michael Dickerson scored a scrambler in the Modifieds over Lance Barnett, who had a season high second place. The Novices were out in goodly numbers with Anthony Gorin (Suz) having a career high day as he went two for two in the Stocks. He had a great come from behind second moto win in the Modifieds for a squeaker second overall over Steve Furuya. Furuya, who ripped the 9-11 Novices once again in the Stocks, had to mov e to the 12-16s for the Modifieds and looked very " ma tu re" in his 2-5 effort for third. . The 125cc Motorcycle Cham pionship battle tightened up again as defending 1981 champ, Mitch Palmer (Hon ), took a 2-2 effort to a Modified tie-breaker overall over Jim Pearson as 1982 point leader, Billy Evans, could do no better than sixth for the day. • Results MINICYCLE CLASSES STK EX: 1.
