In the firs t moto H ol dren's nearest com petitor was Cycle Guide Maga zin e's R on Lawso n (Suz), who managed to keep Holdren with in sight. T h rea ten ing Lawson in third was Circle City Honda 's Pa t Schreffler. Sch reffler's assau lt on the leaders ended after he oversh o t a berm , dropp in g him out of co ntention . Holdren went on to take th e wi n followed by La wson , Wheelsm it h' s Rick Hoffman n (Mai ) a nd Brandon Sneiderwine (Ya m ). Rob Trone too k hi s fir st ever P ro victory in th e 250cc ranks on hi s MidCities/ NEO O il H onda. Mike T ripes took the Open crown on h is ProCi rcu it Husky, and T racy Meeks ro de h is DG /Tea m Green Ka wasaki to the 125cc mo ney . In the first moto of 250cc Pros, Mike Tripes took th e holesho t. Andy Guth a nd Ro b Trone were battling it ou t for second. On th e secon d lap, T ripes bro ke a rod a nd ha d to retire. T ro ne and G u th were in a fierc e battle, changi ng the lea d several times each lap. Then , at th e ha lfw a y point of the moto, G uth blew a h ead gasket a nd had to bow out. At th is point, on ly three bikes were still ru nning. T h en Pat Weber re-entered the action a nd Guth bro ugh t his bike o u t to p ush it ac ross th e fin ish line in fifth. In th e seco nd moto , th e holeshot we nt to th e Graydo n /Ceet rider, Da n ny Bartho lo mew. Trone moved up quickly an d passed Barth o lomew, but Trone sta lle d out in th e second corner an d Bartholomew retook the lead. T ro ne worked h is way back up and grabbed the lead wi th two laps remaining. T ro ne was first ove rall. Bartholomew's 2-2 was second with Orange County Cycle 's Mike Kelly in third. Beca use it was a slow night, it was deci ded tha t all of the Novice rid ers would ru n throu g h the special whoop-de-doo section, usually reserved for just Pro an d Intermedia tes. In 125cc Novice, Mike Magallanes led every lap of both motos on his Suzuki. Magallanes had been h ere before as h e was on an 80cc bike when th e Minis were allowed to rid e th e sectio n several weeks ago. Pritchard picks up SD TR trial win By C lutcher Cruickshank By Bert Valenzuela LAKE MOR ENA, CA, SEPT. 12 ADELANTO, CA, SEPT. 12 The last San Diego trial for this season was held toda y, and th e San Diego Trials riders had an excellent turnout a n d many Andy " Bro -Sh o w" Jefferson won the feature race at Sunrise Valley this day, but, in th e southern vernacular, '.'Hit weren 't eas y!" H e got a stiff argu men t from "Hot" Rod Bra nd a n d T im Locey (in moto two ). In th e fir st moto, Brand took a quick lead; Andy led briefl y on la ps two and three, then Rod took ove r aga in. Thereafter it was a helluva figh t as Rod and Andy diced it out ove r the new co u rse. Rod managed to keep Andy at ba y in a thrilling display by both riders as th ey kept ·lapping other riders . Rod got th e ch eckered with Andy right on his bum . Pat Weber was third. Tim Locey experien ced some bad Iuck and drop ped ou t on lap eight. Mota two saw Jefferson tak e the lead on lap two as he almost ran over a downed Brand. Locey and Weber followed right behind. However , by the end of lap five, Bra n d was up to third . Andy continued to ho ld off Locey until the end of la p eigh t. After that it was a three bike race, although Locey put two la ppers between Andy an d himself. Andy did lik ewise to " H o t new faces. T h e 9:30 a.m. riders ' meeting got off to a slow start, wh ich work ed out well for those riders from Los Angeles w ho h a d n ' t a llowed t he mselves enough time for the long drive. At 10 o 'clock, the riders ro de off. Beginners ra n two loops, all o th ers th ree. T h e loop ran from the p it area, u p a foot trai l tha t must have had a t least a foot of d ust! If a rider was unl u cky enough to be caught behind another rider, it was li ke ridi ng blind, even wi th goggles. T he loop th en went east to the lake, along jee p and hand cut tra ils, with a few steep rocky downh ill s and the n back th ro ugh th e pi ts. All the sections had large roc ks or steep rock faces to clim b or drop off of, with p lenty of ti ght turns. In the Ex pert class, Ma tt Pritchard (SWM) again took top honors home, onl y two points a hea d of Jeff Fish (SWM ). Third pl ace wen t to Ol i Thordarson (Mo n). The rumor th at Dwaine Walters had left Italj et was ob viously true; he was seen sporting a Fantic T-shirt at the section he was checking. Dwaine's brother, Rob Walters (Ital), topped the Amateur class over Erik Soderquist (Fan ). Third place went to John Robertson (SWM) onl y one point behind Erik. Since John transferred into Amateur class he has consistently finished in the top four. Senior Amateur class winner was number one plate holder Gil Smith (Bu l), 10 points ahead of Art Webster (SWM). Jack Heminway (SW M) was third. First Novice went to Andy Parker, a new rider to the sou th ern Californ ia circuit. Rosenburg, Moeller shine at Sunrise OTMX By Bob Alloy ADELANTO , CA, SEPT. 12 T h ir tyof the finest Old Timers met at Sunrise Cycle Park today to have another go a t the ulti- ' mate sport, motocross. It was truly a blast going aroun d this fast and challenging track.. In Master 's division, Dennis Ros en burg was out th ere sh in in g in the lead for five laps, and then he was passed by Hoyt Staham who took the lead and went on to win. Second place was Rosenburg's. Again in the second moto, Rosenburg was out there in the lead, but this time he held it for a ll six laps to take first place. Staham wa s relagated second place. In Junior Masters, George Spearing got right into the lead by taking the holeshot and just doing what he knows so well - to take a beautiful first place finish. Buzz Moeller grabbed a second place standing. The posi tions were reversed in the second moto with Spearing -ta kin g second and Moeller getting the win. . Dave Gutierrez, of the Expert's division, has really proved he's got the stuff, since he has been moved up to Expert, with yet another wrap-up of both moto wins. Ed Scheidler outmaneuvered just about everyone else and came in with both second place finishes. Dick Burley, of the Amateur's division, outdistanced a ll the other Amateurs and was rewarded with first place. Al Smith h as been away from all th is motocross action for quite some time, and you would ex pect a bit of caution, but h e raced away out there like a seasoned rider and took a ni ce second place finish in both motos.
