Delameter, Gorton duke at DeAnza By Kit Palm er SU N NYMEA D, CA, SE PT. 19 A la rge number of ri ders came out to do battle today at DeAn za Cycle Park under almost perfect wea the r conditions. Low 30 tem pe ra tu res kept the traction up while keep ing th e dust down. Some of th e da y's lightest racing action took place in the 125cc Novice class when Rincon Kawasaki 's Lance Gorton (Ka w) jammed into the lead at th e start of moto one, while being pursued by Jason Newman (Yam ), James Tonery (Suz ) and Pat Vernola (Suz). Within a few laps, Gorton managed to build a sizable lead, but near the rear of the pack was Scott Def.ameterrYam ). He began picking his wa y through the pack. With only two laps remaining, DeLameter had control of second, but Gorton had enough of a cus hion for the win. Dek a meter took seco nd followed by Neuman, Vernola and J oh n Tarranl (Suz) . In the seco nd m o to it was DeLame-, ter who had control of the lead while Gorton trailed a d istant seco nd. Gorton decided to ho ld the throttle wide open to catch the leader. And he did. The two bo unced off ber ms and each other throughout the moto, while Gorton searched for a way in to the lead. O n the last lap, the two were neck-'n-neck, but DeLameter held on for the win and overall vic LOry. Second overall went to Gorton while two thirds by N eurnan were good enough for third. A flawless I-I combo gave Garry Bened ict (Yam) the overall in the Mini Novice class. Benedict's nearest competitor was West Coast Furnitu re 's David Church (Suz) . Church's 3-2 outing gave him second while Honda of R edla nd 's Da vid " Su m oe" Sharp (Hon ) cruised LO a third. Result s MI NI BEG: 1. Frank Sm it h (Yam); 2. M itc h Eber (Kaw); 3.
