Campbell shocks the clocks at Castle Rock TT By Clay Light CASTLE R O CK, WA, AUG. 28 National number 70 Jeffrey Campbell (Elite/Harry Lillie/ Mountain Springwater/Simpson/Out Front Number Plates/ Verns Air Sales C-A ) set the final race of the 1982 Northwest TT season ablaze at Castle Rock by taking the Expert main, the Expert trophy dash and the fast time, which was a new track record at 22.66, beating the record set two weeks ago by injured Jeff McDanieL Randy Green (American Hon/ND/Bel-Ray/Simpson) had revenge on his mind, beating last night's Regional winner Scott Miller (Trak Tak/Out Front Number Plates/Tri) for the Junior main event win. Honda supported Danny Bennett (N -D/ Bel-Ray/Bennett Lectron/Out Front Number Plates/Hon) made a clean sweep of the season from race three at Sidewin ders to the final race of the season here at Castle Roc k, tak ing the Novice main over Californian Greg Gray (Yam). Campbell led the Expert field into turn one, just as he did here at the Regional and had Tacoma's Charlie Barkman, Frank Word III (H-D) and Tom McCullough (Lou Kinish Tri) in hot pursuit. Word moved into second for another lap before Barkman put his XR500 based Honda into the runner-up spot. Campbell was riding his best; without Mickey Fay and Brad Hurst here to stop him, it was just like a picnic as the southern Oregon sensation blew the doors off Barkman's hounding attempts at inheriting the lead. McCullough and Ron Yamamoto (Yam) staged an all out battle for third, after Word had problems and dropped to a disappointing 10th with only two laps to go. Campbell got the checkers over Barkman, McCullough, Yamamoto and California's Sal Hoffman (Yam), who was fifth, holding off late rallies by Don ald Dodge and Mike Sullivan. Results 30 EX M AI N: 1. FA ST TIME: 1. Jeff Campell (C-A) 22 .66. /' Jansen, Larsen and Mitchell score , at Washougal mudfest By Brian Barnes WASHOUGAL, WA, AUG. 29 Three weeks after the Washougal National, Washougal motocross held its first amateur race. The track featured rough sections to challenge everyone, but it was Mother Nature who did the challenging. It started raining during the first 125cc Pro moto and didn 't stop for some time. The track was left in deep mud, forcing cancellation of all the 100s and minibikes. . The first 125cc moto started with overcast skies above the track. Jim Anderson (Yam support/MX Fox/ ATK/Kal-Gard/Dallas Baker Products), Rob Watilo (Yam support/ Yamaha of Salem/RW Racing Products) and Mike McCormiCk (Fred's Cycle City Suzuki) blasted into the lead during the first lap with Eric Hall (Yam support) and David Hettinga (R W Racing) close behind. By the mid-point, Kevin Jansen' (Kaw support/Dimeos Gym ) and Hi Point/ Honda-support ace Mike Larson had moved into fourth and fifth. Those five finished in those positions just as the rain started. When the second moto began, the track had been churned up into gooey mud with the uphill and downhill very treacherous. Hall and Hettinga holeshot the moto and by the third turn everyone that followed them was coated with mud. Larson made a big move into the lead on the second lap and Jansen followed right behind, but the Honda rider suffered an unfortu nate spill that ended his chances and all owed J a nsen to speed through the mud for the moto win and first overall. H all and Suzuki rider Ted Harry dueled the entire rnoto with Hall getting the nod for second place. Richard Earle and Kevin Hofenbredl rode impressively for fourth and fifth . The 250cc riders had to battle mud in both of their motos. With 26 riders in the starting gate and a huge lake located in the second straight, those riders who got out front would have a definite advantage. Arne Hettman (Hon support/SEER) along with Anderson, Team Honda/Hi Point ace Phil Larson and Robby Watilo led the start and every rider behind them was muddy by the second turn. Larson took over the lead within the next lap and after four laps Anderson had moved by to gain the n umber one spot. The field spread out considerably and ' when the one-lap flag was given, Anderson was still holding off Larson's Honda, but somehow Larson got by to take the win, while Anderson followed right behind in second. Third place was Watilo, Steve Smith was fourth and Hettman grabbed a fifth . Only 12 of the 26 riders braved the course for th e second moto. Steve Williams (Yam), Larson and Smith led the second start and Larson was in the lead by the end of lap one, cruising for the win. Bob Bu ffaloe (Highland H onda / H i Point) and Husky USA / Answer-mounted Eric Eaton placed seco nd and third with Smith taking seco nd overall with his 4-4 tally. Results 125 B: 1. Wosick wins two at Baylands MX By Bill Spencer FREMONT, CA, AUG. 26 Team had a night Park, Honda's Larry Wosick relatively easy time to at Baylands Raceway taking both 250cc and Open Pro motos. Shawn Cady has returned to the scene of his oldstanding minibike ways, winning the 125cc Pro battle over Rod Smith and Shawn McConn. The 125cc Pro class for CMC racing here is definitely a thriller and has been dominated by AMA number one Smith, except for this evening; former flat track whiz, Cady took the overall in some very fine action. Rod won the first moto with some fine racing while Cady held second over McConn, R ick Ryal} and Andy Tesser. In the second round cady blasted th e h alf of the gate th at dro p ped and was long gone. Despi te protestations of the other half that the gate didn 't . q uite drop, tough was the comment. Cady won it handily with Smith working from way back for a second while Mike Whalen held third over Da n ny Dobbins and McConn. Cady took the overall over Smith and McConn with Whalen fourth over Tressor. Rod Smith and his Suzuki swapped wins with Wosick in the 250cc Pro tour with Wosick leading out the second round and winning big. Smith played catch up for second overall while Cady reaffirmed his strength with good 3-4 rounds for a tie with Mike Reimers. Danny Dobbins outpointed Scott Fendoirf for fifth . Wosick made it a do u ble for the night by easi ly winning the O pe n Pro with Jerry Brandt and Troy DeHerrera doing the battling to the delight of the fans. Brandt and his Concord Yamaha posted a 3-2 for the second spot dough wi th DeHerr era and his East Ba y Yamaha the opposite at 2-3 and third over Al Silh an ek and Pete H an n. View By Jan Newman SANDY, OR, AUG. 22 Jim Anderson (Yam) defied the energy draining heat at 1\1t. View to nab four cool wins in the 125 and 250cc Pro classes. Rick Burgett (Yam) picked up the Open win. Though the temperature may only have been in the 90s, its effect can best be described as withering heal. Moisture on the track disappeared like a wisp of smoke in a high wind. The Open Pro race consisted of only two riders, Burgett and Barney Newman (Mai ), They were started ahead of the 125s in the first moto. Burgett played around with Newman until Anderson caught them, then Burgett went off to play with Anderson. Anderson was in no mood to play, though. He rode off all alone. David Hettinga (Yam) was second 125 for - a couple of laps before mechanicals put him out. Steve Corcoran (Yam) came on strong to finish in front of Kevin White (Hon). Round two had the 125s in front. Anderson w_as _in front and gone
