Soutbern Callfornla-Arlzona-Soutbern Nevada- Soutbern Call Western hotline was Sonny Baskin (Mo n), Gregs practice partner, who took top honors. No vice class winner Scott Armand (Ital), just beat out Bay Area rider Howard Phelps on his 80cc Italjet. First place Beginner went to Bob Reeder (Hon), who is obviously ready for Novice, coming in with nine points for the day , 22 points ahead of th e second place rider. At the event, it looked like VOTE riders dominated the scene. They took home first Amateur, first and second Novice and first and second Beginner. Yamaha support rid er Vin ce McMahon powered in to the first rnoto lead followed by Honda-mounted Kurt Sofka, Kawasaki tea mster Goat Breker and Suzuki pilot Clint H ardi ck. Tara ntino quickly charged from mi d -p ack to begi n c ha lle ngi n g H ardick. Sofka drop ped o u t with mech anica l problems as McMahon co ntin ued to set th e pace o u t front. Tarantino worked into th e n umber three slot near the halfway point, a nd Breker ma de h is pass for the lead, quick ly opening up a five-second ga p over the ba tt le for seco nd . McMah on held off Tara ntino for a few more laps, but the Honda rider finally sli p ped past and began closing on Breker, who was ex pe rie ncing shi fting difficulties. With j ust a few la ps re main ing, Tarantino took over the front position a nd reach ed the checkers fir st. Brek er fi ni shed second a hea d o f McMahon . Pro-C ircu it H us ky rider, Mike Tripes, p u t on a powerful lat emoto dr ive to finish fo u rth in front of H ardick. Ro und two wa s a bit less dramatic as Tara n tino co ntrolled the lead action for m ost o f th e race. Breker dropped fro m th e race wi th a probable blown trans, and Hardick p icked up secon d for th e moto a nd seco nd overall. McMahon went home wi th th e th ird p lace sh are o f th e p urse while Honda rider Dean Cates finished fourth with a 6-3 scor e, and Honda-mounted Jim Brodie rounded out th e top five. Suzuki rider Robert Reisinger and Yamaha-mounted Greg Zitterkopf provided the action in the Open Pro race. Reisinger aced the first moto with Zitterkopf following him to the flag. In the second rnoto, Zitterkopf powered to a comfortable lead until getting a flat rear tire near moto's end. Reisinger slipped past and took the overall, despite having to r ide with an injured hand. Zitterkopf placed second while Jeff Ellens survived the heat to place his Honda 480 third. Denis dominates OCIR Minis By Steve Crosby IRVINE, CA. AUG. 19 Hot action and -close racing· were the order of the night tonight at Orange County International Raceway. The fans, who crowded th e grandstands found something worth cheering about in ever y race. In the Pro ranks, Todd Peterson made a ra re appearance in the 125cc class and rode to a perfect 1-1. In second place each moto was Chris Heinrich with Dean Cates third. In the 250cc class Todd Peterson won the first rnoto easily, but started in last place in the second moto a nd could only work his way up to fourth . The overall win went to the ProCircuit Husky rider, Mike Tripes, with a 3-1 tall y. Peterson was second with Graydon-sponsored Danny Bartholomew third. . In Open Pro , G ary Gonzales rode h is Mai co to a 2-1 fini sh to take home the biggest O pen class purse of th e. year. Dan Berg and Pete Rickertson were 'second a nd third overall on their Suzukis. The p its were packed with Mi ni rid ers thi s week. O ver 85 of th e sm all cc ra cers tu rn ed out. Den is passed Ruth erford for the win. Second overa ll went to Shan Niday who posted a 4-2 with T oya ma 's 3-4 good.for thi rd. In Mini Intermediate, Craig Canoy rode to a perfect I-I score over a dozen other riders. Mike Magallanes was second and Thayne Zito third. Paul Molina used a 1-2 on his Yamaha to take the Novice victory. Second among the Novices was Sun, west's Gary Lacy with a 2-4 and third went to Chad Smart's 4-3. Bunky Morton, who won the, second rnoto, managed only a seventh the first time around and ended up fourth overall.
