Pritchard takes SeTA Watermelon Trial By Clutcher Cruickshank VALENCIA, CA, AUG. 22 Indian Dunes, the sight of the January Joe Ige Cup Trial, was the setting today for a very hot and humid Southern California Trials Association Annual Watermelon Trial. The loop was laid out along the Santa Clara River, up into the h ills and back down through the river that saw many riders swimming, instead of walking, their sections. . A lot of imagination went into the 10 sections. considering the very little they have to work with at the Dunes. Sections five and six were the most talked about after the event: Section five had the riders cross a three foot gully to make a quick right, then straight up a hill , around an old oak tree, 180 degrees down (avoiding another tree) , then a right camber turn to the exit. If the riders man aged to ride this section without encountering these trees , they were doing okay. This section saw many crashes. Ro n Stevens '(Fa n ) again showed us how to take a fall , a repeat of his two-day Big Bear log trick! Many riders found it hard going with no traction in the deep, dead leaves. Section six was also tricky. The Experts rode up a six foot wide rain rut. that was full of small boulders, to a hairpin turn at the top and a straight ride down to the exit. The Amateur and Novice section went halfway up the hill just to sen d them . - off a ledge . across the rut and down to the exit. This really tested the ri ders on their floating turns, which seemed to be the best way to ride it . With the absence of Dwayne Walters (Ital ), Matt Pritchard (SWM) rode an impressive 14 point event to top the Expert class before leaving for the East Coast Nationals. In the Amateur class, the favorite to win was G reg Papazian (SWM), but at the end it
