It h e r n Nevad a - S o u t her n Ca lif ornia-Arizona- S o uthern Nevad Nex t round, Springman was ou t fr o n t , then Thompson, H u lb ert, Lewis, Bow ers and DeVo n Fa rl ey. Hulbert go t Thompson and Roger had to be content with sittin g on Darren 's rear wheel for the rest of the race as the three front run ners ga ssed it hard enough to keep themselves away from th e rest of the field. Bud Carroll won the fir st ro u nd of Open Pro wi th R o ger Thom pson eventually lo si n g secon d spot to Springman, who was alwa ys in th e hunt. The last ro u nd was th e biggie. Springman got to turn one fir st, but it was Carroll in front on the fir st lap. Lap after hip went down wi th Carroll knowing Springma n was r ig h t th ere, but unable to h ea r the sma ller motor on Springman 's machine over th e bellow of his si ngle; J eff wa s still on his 250cc. Behind them was a gap, then came H ul bert with Thom pson tryin g to take th ird away, which he co u ld n' t do. T he white fla g came out and around came the front two again. Approaching the north turn, Sp ringma n went fo r it, shooting fo r th e inside, and finding someth ing there to ri de on, with Carroll lea n ing on hi m to keep the pair of them from sk a tin g out to the wa ll. Ou t they ca me with Sp ringm a n gettin g to th e checkered flag first and Carro ll proba bly wish ing th ey h ad marked where the ed ge of the track was instead of letti n g the veh icl es groove one! Carroll wo n the 500cc Pro class, ta kin g both hea ts, and wa s follo wed in both times by John Spe rry w ho was holding h is own o ver Jay Le wis and Joel Windha m . In the combined J un ior/Intermedia te 500cc race Kevin Clayton wo n th e first heat and was doing very well in th e sec6nd until h is bike let go. T ha t gave Len G a m bo an easier time of it as he kept hi s fro n t spot away from Dan Lyyski. A second place in the first round gave Bam bo the o verall Win . The 250cc Jun iors wen t fast and furio us with Dave Miller wi nning it two straight, but it was n' t a giveaway. First rnoto, Bruce Nordstrom had the lead for quite a wh ile, th en Charlie Saunders took over. H e fell off on the last lap, but, by this time, Miller had wo rk ed on past Ed Abella, and there he was, the winner. Next round , it was Nordstrom out a head for a bit, but, again, u p ch arged Miller and to o k the le a d a way . Saunders was righ t with them fo r a while, but he fell off again and the fin ish was Miller , Nordstrom, Abella and Larry Saxon. Results 125 INT: 1. Rex Wesse ls (Yam). 125 JR: 1.
