He won both his heats, something no one else managed to do. Other Scratch heat winners were Daniel Moore, Barry Pelkey (C-A) and Mark Key (Yam). Other qualifying heat winners were Eric Rausch (H-D), Randy Texter (H-D) and Rob Ely (H-D). In the final, Moore was the second racer to finish, followed by Rausch, Sammy Sweet (H-D) and Ely . Ten riders qualified for the final. Dan Bennett concluded his impressive week of racing in Sturgis by taking the Novice final. Riding a Honda, he posted a time of 4:36.93 over the 10-lap race. Bennett won both his heats, as did Mike Kirby (Yam). However, Kirby wa s disqualified for illegal tires and did not run in the main event. In the third group, Randy Triplett won the Scratch heat on his Honda, and Kyle Mills won the qualifying heat on his Honda. Mills went on to place second to Bennett i n the final, a nd Max Wilson was third on his Yamaha. Triplett was fourth , and Jon Giesick was fifth on his Kawasaki. John Giesick . • Beach charges to victory at Sturgis HM ST URGIS , SD, AUG. 14 Local favorite ja y Beach charged to a convincing victory in the Expert division of Professional flat track racing at 36 the Sturgis Fairgrounds h alf mile today. Beach pushed his Harley-Davidson to victory in the six-lap first heat over Robert Crabbe. The winner of the second heat was Phillip Darcy; Harley-Davidson riders snapped up all 12 spots in the finals . Nineteen riders were entered. Beach built up a huge lead in the 15-lap final, so the real racing was between Darcyand Jeff Johnson for . second place. About halfway through the race, Johnson found the going too tight and went down in the first turn. Darcy claimed second, and Johnson recovered for sixth. Mike Garrison was third, followed by Keith Ulicki and David Durelle. Pete Hames was the top Junior rider as he pushed his HarleyDavidson to victory. Hames finished fourth in the first six-lap scratch heat, then came on to win his qualifying heat and the 15-lap final. Rob Ely won his first two heats, and was second to Hames in the final. Eric Rausch won his two heats and was third in the final. Dan Ingram was fourth and Matthew Rozowicz was fifth. All the top riders in the final rode Harleys. Other heat winners were Daniel Moore (Han) and Mark Key (Yam). Thirtyeight riders were entered in the Junior division. Narramore nicks Junior-Expert ST STURGIS, SD , AUG. 14 jeff Narramore overcame a disappointing scratch heat in junior-Expert short track racing tonight; no one caught him for th e rest of th e night. , Narramore was fifth in his first six lap run at the j .C, Hoel Track, as Daniel Moore won the heat. However , it was Narramore who won the six-lap qualifying heat and Moore , who placed fifth. Meanwhile, Dan Ingram dominated his section in winning both the scratch and the qualifying heat, while Randy Green and Barry Pelkey did the same in their sections. In the fifth section, Todd Giesick and Mark Lenhardt took turns being first and second. Jay Beach won the half mi le. but mechanicals put him out of the Regionals. In the semifinals, Narramore, Ingram, Green and Giesick came out ahead in their heats after 10 laps. In the 20-lap final, Narramore showed the wayan his Kawasaki, followed by Ingram on a Honda, Green on a Honda, Giesick on a Yamaha, and Lenhardt on a Kawasaki. Thirty-seven riders were entered. Bowman bounces to double Sturgis hillclimb victory STURGIS, SD, AUG. 13 Result s ., Ron Bowman was a double winner in Amateur hillclimb action today at the jackpine Gypsies Motorcycle Clubgrounds in Sturgis, SD . Bowman drove his 500 Honda to th e top of the hill in :06.402 to edge Ben McBride in the Open class. Bowman also pushed a 250 Yamaha to vic tory in the 250cc class in :06.393, th e best time of the day . Of the 65 entries, 21 managed to make the top of the hill in one of the two runs. Bennett turned the 20-lap final, on his 250 Honda, in ·4:49.38 to defeat Mike Kirby who had beaten Bennett in the first scratch heat. Third p lace FRIDAY SHORT TRACK FINAL: 1. Dan Bennett (Han); 2. Amateur Short Track to Haight, Sauers, Bennett, Hagger · STURGIS, SD, AUG. 11-12 Anthony Haight, Troy Sauers and Dan Bennett were the top riders in two nights of Amateur short track racing at the j .c. Hoel Track in Sturgis, SD. Haight won the 125cc class both Wednesday and Thursday, and, also claimed the win in an ATV Outlaw class run the first night. His Wednesday time of 2:34.54, over 10 laps, was the better effort of the two finals. Sauers took 'th e 80cc class both nights, with his Wednesday time of 2:39.11 , over the 10 laps, the better of the two efforts. Bennett didn't compete Wednesday night, but Thursday he showed that he was the best on the bigger bikes. Wednesday 's 250cc winner, Randy Green, wasn 't around to challenge Bennett Thursday, but Bennett did take care of Wednesday's Open class winner, Jeff Haggar, in Thursday's finals. • Results WEDNESDAY SHORT TRACK 80: 1.
