O'Mara, Campbell compete for IRC final win By Lee Taylor Photo by Greg Taylor ORANGE, CA , AUG. 22 Todd Campbell, piloting a 1983 pre production Kawasaki for DC Performance, took the 125cc P ro s by storm! Campbell, fresh fro m the Intermediate ra nks, took on American Honda ace J oh nny O 'Mara, and h is works bike , a nd ga ve hi m a run for his money in th e fin al round of the California Racing Club's IRC Seri es. " The firs t moto, a d us ty co m ba t field with rac ers dropping th eir bikes in dust bowl turns, saw O 'Mara take command and figh t off Campbell in the runnerup position, Honda teammate Ron Turner in third, Suzukimounted Roger H ensl ey and Chris Heisser , a U.S. Suzuki en try. Ame rican Horida swept first and second with O'Mara and Turner holding Campbell to third. When th e gate dropped for their second round, Campbell did the un thinkable. He had th e audacity to grab a five-bike holeshot over O 'Mara, and everyone else for that matter. Campbell proceeded to hold O 'Mara to second for half th e moto, showing a maturity and control most Pros spend their first year or two developing. O 'Mara was all over the track in pursuit, nearly executing a classic "Flying W" in the process. Campbell finally missed the mark in a turn and O 'Mara took charge; a few inches were all he needed to slip on by. Going down to the wire, a three-way duel shaped up for second between Ca m pbell , Hensley, and Suzuki of Bak ersfield entry, Gary Bowman , A cliff ha n ger if ever there was one, Ca mpbell held seco nd to the end, Bowman snaked third, H en sley fourth and A.J. Whiting rounded ou t the - top five. O 'Mara scooped up top mo ney for the day, Campbell clinched second place and Hensley took third place money with a 4-4 ride. Larry Brooks, aboard a Suzuki for R&D and "Oa kley, racked up an impressive pair of wins in th e 80cc Expert contest. The first time out, Brooks found hea vy pressure from Prem ier Yam aha entry, Mark Toyama, pilo ting a preproduction 1983mach ine wi th Honda rider Mi ke H eal ey in th ird a n d Kawasaki-mounted T im Rutherfo rd in-fourth. Brooks held firm , holding Toyama and H eal ey to second and . third respectiv ely. When the Minis blasted off th e lin e for their fin al encounter and last chance at th e $1,000 in gift cert ificates offered by Suzuki of Van Nuys, it was Brooks, Paul Den is and Toyama for the top three. Brooks a nd Denis were side by side for th e lead and finall y tangled and disappeared in the dust bowl. T oyam a lost no time in snatching th e lead only to find Brooks back up in front and holding . to the end. Toyama clinched second , overall honors and Van Nuys Cycle entry Jeff Barbacovi's 5-4 tally brought h im th ird place honors. 1983 Prototypes wer e th e news of the day. Tim Loce y, riding for Answer Products, took Yam ah a 's '83 Open ma chine on its maiden race for a beautiful pair of back-to-back wins in th e Open Pro class , holding Will y Simons to second and Brian Fr y, out of T amm Racing, in third.
