Whelchel continued his streak with a 2-1 in the I25cc Pro class. Wageman won the first round, bu t went down hard in th e second after try ing to reca pture the lead fro m Whelchel. Jim Simon s (Simi Cycl e), Loui e Franco (American Honda ) and Zol i Meszaros (S.V.N.) put on strong rides for their share of th e purse. Some heavy dicing too k p lace in the I25cc Intermediate class with Andy Ellis (Bill Moore Yam) going back to back for the win . The Suzuki-mount ed Lippie brothers ran o ne and two off the li ne in th e first moto. Rand y Li ppie go t a little brea thing room from Alan Li ppie who fe nded off Ellis, Bi ll Delg ad o (S. V.N ..) an d R ick Hough tal ing. Ell is turned on the gas and got by both Lip p ies and Del gado went down , putt ing H oughtaling in fo urth. As Ell is built a healthy lead, the Lippies' went at it wh eel to wh eel with Alan taking a smooth sand line for second. Lance Johnso n came up to pass H o ugh ta l i n g a nd fi n ish fourth. El lis again grabbed the lead and stretched it o u t. . Randy passed Delga do when he tr ied to clear his goggles, and the Li p p ie boys were a t it again . Ma pes kept his coo l to edge Yamaha of Redlands Colin "Bones" Ryan (Ya m ). In the first mo to, Mapes shot into the early lead h eavily pursued by Tim Nash (Yam), Larry Dimmitt (Suz) and R yan. The fou r leaders Quickly pulled away from the rest of the pack engaged in a dog-fight for the lead. By lap four, Dimmit had shot down Mapes for the lead while Ryan did the same to Nash for th ird.
