Fire ry Brand at S unrise By Bert Valen zuela ADELANTO, CA, AUG. 22 The weather was hot, but "Hot" Rod Brand was even hotter. In fact, torrid is a better word to describe his two rides at Sunrise 32 Valley today. He tore around the quarter mile course like a Republican at a Georgian political rally. J\1st prior to the first rnoto, Rod remarked, "I guess it's hot enough for me to go out and really burn 'em up." That was exactly what he did, in spite of a nasty spill at the start of rnoto one. . Rod, Ronnie Gibson and Dave Pettigrew left the gate and hit the first turn with not as much as a gnat's pos~e!!or separating them. In mak- ing a passing move on Gibson, it appeared some tires touched and Rod went arse-over-tea-keule, After a few kicks and. "Oh darns!", "Shucks!", and "Fooeys!", he got his Suzi' going again and put on a "fantabulous" exhibition as he worked his way past _ everyone to retake the lead on lap four. As Brand increased his lead through the remainder of the race, Gibson and Pettigrew put on an interesting duel for the second spot. Gibson prevailed and Dave got third followed by Rick Guilmette in fourth. After the first two turns of the second rnoto, Brand fled from the pack and finished 34 seconds ahead of Gibson. Pettigrew almost passed 01' Hoot on the seventh circuit, but a tire touch took him out for good. That allowed Guilmette to take third for the day. Smilin' Sam Groce took the first rnoto in the 250cc Intermediate contest, but ' let youngster Mark Clark outlast himin the second stanza for the day's win. Mike Edmonds was third and new "desert denizen", Al Guzman finished fourth . The "viejos" did all right against thekiddies in this one. Johnny Ray was right up there with the bigger bikes on his 125Suzi ', but he suffered one of his patented one point landings and was too fuzzy to answer the call for the second moto. Alex Lopez took both motos in the Novice Beginner race for the 125cc Novice win. Charlie Strong was the first Open Novice and Dale Conner the winner for the 250cc Novice group. Scott Sewell pulled his usual holeshot, but did his equally usual sixth lap fade to finish second behind Strong. . Don Herold, 125cc Beginner, was second to Lopez in both motos to take his class with Jon Costantino second and Mark Burks third. The top 250cc Beginners were Tim Henry, Dave Wingall and Mark Johnson. Such was the case . tonight at Corona Raceway. When the gate dropped for the start of the first rnoto, Gerry Lattimer (Kaw) blasted to the front of the pack ahead of Fabian Bucheli, Dwight Wilkinson (Yam), Eddi Kennedy (Yam) and Rick Taylor (Suz). However, Lattimer's lead was short-lived; Bucheli darted by the leader during the second lap. Bucheli tried to stretch his lead, but Lattimer clung to Bucheli's rear fender. The two remained neck-n-neck throughout the race and Bucheli emerged on top. . Moto two saw Kennedy jam into the front inches ahead of Don Feely, Lattimer and Bucheli. Kennedy held the throttle wide open to take the win'. Bucheli, however; had to pass Lattimer on the last lap for third to capture the overall. Feely's second rnoto second entitled him to fourth. It was quite a night for 125cc Intermediate rider Mike Roberts (Yam). Roberts smoked the Intermediates, in the first rnoto, leading from start to finish for the win. In the second moto, Roberts rode Pro giving Scott Wilkinson (Suz) a fantastic battle. Wilkinson grabbed the holeshot inches ahead of Roberts, but on the second lap, Roberts snuck by when Wilkinson got sideways exiting a turn. The two were sometimes side by side through Corona's doublejumps. It looked as though Roberts was going to hold back Wilkinson for the win, but with only two laps to go, Wilkinson slipped by Roberts taking the win. Result s 50 PEE WEE: 1. Kayle Leogrande; 2. Whelchel wastes three AME Pro classes By Judy Greenberg VALENCIA, CA, JULY 22 The second round of the American Motocross Enterprise's Yamaha Dealers Association series was well attended on the Shadow Glen track at Indian Dunes. The temperature soared well into th e 100's, but it didn't stop John Whelchel from winning all three Pro classes aboard his Answer Products/Van Nuys Yamahas. Russ Wageman (Kal-Giud/S.V.N. ) stormed out of the gate to take the first 250cc Pro win. Craig Cole held the early second spot while being pressured by Sunshine Yamaha's Erin Buskirk. Zoli Mesaros (S.V.N.), Jim Coffey, Whelchel and Andy Segale ran tight in the next positions until . Whelchel broke through the traffic and continued forward. By this time, Wageman had a tremendous lead and rode with a steady pace, but Whelchel closed lap by lap with a battle going down to the wire. Coffee brought his Burbank Yamaha in for a safe third, with Buskirk and Larry Baker fourth and fifth. . The Dirt Bike /O'Neal Kawasakrof Ken Zahrt 'h olesho t the second gate with Seagle breathing down his neck. Whelchel passed Randy Morales and soon displaced Segale, with Zahrt his final victim. The trio moved from the pack and held positions to the flag.
