II It was a ba ttle royal for the Mon ey classes tonight at Coro na Raceway with so me very ten acio u s an d hungry riders on ha nd. The battle lines were drawn ea rly in the he a t race on the short track, whe n Orlando La m bo y and h is G .S. Au to Supply H o nda showed th e rest o f the field h is backside as he went wire to wire in his debut in th e Pro cla ss. Roger T h o m pso n wa s second with Greg Nelso n getting by Darr en Hulbert for th e third. T he 15-la p main was some of the best and closest rac in g seen in a while. Off the line it was T R Ra ci ng-spo nsored Tho mpson in first with Lamboy seco nd a nd Ne lso n third. On the seco nd la p, La m bo y edged into the lea d as the top three ran tighter than ti cks o n a hou nddog. Thompson drop ped to third and, one la p later, to fou rt h as the battle waged . Of the fifth la p there was a whole new ba ll game as Ne lso n , anoth er member of th e T R Racing team, took over the lead with T h o m p so n ba ck in second and cha llen gin g a nd Lambo y th ir d. O n the eigh th la p , Tho m pso n fou nd the hole he wa s looking for and took o ver the front spot. From there o n out there was no stopping him as he bro u gh t it o n h ome for the win. Nelson was second with Lamboy th ird. The 250cc Money half m il e was ano the r crap shoot as T hompson j u m ped out on top with H u lbert seco nd and La m boy third. Tho mpson loo ked to have things well in hand, but H ul bert had other id eas as he p ut his Carl Brown-sp onsored Suzu ki in th e lead on the seventh la p. Try as he m ig h t, Thompso n could find no m istakes in Hulbert's li ne and ha d to settle fo r second with Lam boy third. Open Amateur was an o th er race tha t nobody had th eir finger on. On the short track it was Don Meiner with his TR Raci n g Yama ha who went out first wi th Bill Dobbs. sp o n so red by Sun west , in second and Bob G raves third. Dobbs too k over th e lead o n th e second lap a nd proceeded to p ut som e daylig h t between him and the rest of the field . Graves had moved into second and was playing it cool as he steadily closed the gap on Dobbs. It came down to a drag race out of turn four , and it was Graves by a tire at the finish. Meiner was third. On the half mile it was Meiner all the wa y wi th Graves second and Dobbs third. Bruce Nordstrom and Alan Ronska sp lit the 250cc class with Nordstrom taking th e short track and Ronska th e . half mile. Brent Bowers returned to Co rona in style as he went wire to wire in the I25c c Amateur/Expert short track. Ken Brown was second and J ason Bell third. In the 250cc Exper t main on the short track, Ri ck Witte grabbed the holeshot with Shau n La rkin running a close second. Byron H o p kin s and Rick Williams soon took over the battle for second with Darin Balderston running fourth. Larkin took the . win with Williams in a tight second, and Baldersto n finished third. Ba ldersto n and Den n is Parks vied for the holeshot in th e 250cc Expert main on the TT. Parks took the lead with Williams in seco nd and Ba lderston and H o p kins figh tin g for third . With Parks and Williams ba ttl in g out in front, Hopkin s took the third place spot with Bal dersto n hot in fo urth. Parks to ok th e win , Williams finished second, an d H op ki ns took third. In th e T. T . mai n of the Open Expert class, Bob R ussell got the start wi th Bart Beninati a nd Tom Burcham running close fo r second. Marlow Parks ca me through to ta ke third place. With the fir st three p laces running way out in fro nt, R ussell pulled ahead o f th e rest of the pack and Parks took the second place spot, with Burch am run ni ng third.
