Hills Ferry Hospital benefit to Carr By Bill Spencer NEWMAN, CA, AUG. 14 Chris Carr came out on top of the annual benefit short track for the Westside Hospital of Newman with a tremendous turnout of both riders and spectators with Carr winning the 250cc Expert show and a reported 30 points that puts him back in the point lead for top black plate. . Complete with a visiting helicopter and local dignitaries, the usual flies in the ointment included a late starting time and even later finish. Winkie Freitas opened up the main events with his usual pair of wins. Tommy Carriger and the Salinas Valley Plumbing Yamaha keep tabs on him with Eric Mayfield -in for third in the 100cc portion, while it was Carriger again in for second on the 80cc class bikes. For the 23 riders signed up to do battle in 250cc Expert, it was one of the busiest nights of the year. Doug Chandler had to ride and win the semi to make the main. On the start, it was Chris Carr and the TV Service/ ND /Jorgy'sCan-Am never having to do anything but lead the pack. Bruce Johnson had his hands full of Joe Knight, Chad Felicio and Scott Podergois while Chandler was working up from the last spot. At the halfway point, Carr was long gone with Knight dropping back to fifth alongside Mike Arthur and Chandler trying to work his CR250R around the field . Scott Nail (SK Bul) found himself stuck on the outside and worked his way backward while Felicio kept up a constant pressure to settle in for third behind Carr and Johnson. Knight got by and held off Arthur for fourth and fifth with Podergois holding off Chandler and Ken Netto. Craig Scroggins returned to the fray after a four month layoff, because a truck tried to saw him in half, and won his heat on the Mike Wright Yamaha. His luck wasn't holding for the main though. Knight, Carrillo blast Baylands ST By Bill Spencer ii Joe Knight and Steve Carrillo took the Expert main event wins and then finished onetwo respectively in regular FREMONT, CA, AUG. Wednesday night short track racing tonight at Baylands Raceway. The park's quarter mile dirt oval was the sight of the King of the Bay finale. Continued racing has depended on a larger turnout and it is working ever so slightly, but track conditioning remains a problem. Pee- Wee Phil Fuentes continues to dominate -the little kid class, but Nicole Peters won her heat race and gave all a smile. Rick Lovitt took both the heat and 250cc Novice main with a big margin of victory over Ray Harold, who was locked in a battle with Bill Kabage for the distance. Steve Haymond snuck in for third on the SK Bultaco. It was a 360cc Novice survival contest for Billy Gonzales, as he was one of only two guys who made it any'where near the right number of laps. Billy led it all the way and had no problems. Jack Winans led the entire distance in the 500cc Novice, with Rick Lovitt taking second by getting ahead of a . determined Lonnie George on the Fremont Cycle Center Honda. Steve Carrillo led all the necessary laps of the 500cc Expert class with Mike Kunsman coming from the back of the pack to take second; this was his best finish since his return after a three year layoff. Eric Weisler won his heat over Danny McDonnell in a good battle that saw young Dan trying a good outside-square-the-cornerto-the-checkered run that didn't work, but Danny got it all together and took third over John Taylor's trick . Maico. Weisler was fifth on his 40 inch Yamaha. Anderson, Buffaloe on target at , Mulkey ORV MX By Brian 'Barnes McMINNVILLE, OR, AUG. 15 Another super day of racing was featured today at Mulkey ORV Park in McMinnville, OR, with Pro titles falling to Jim Anderson (Yam supportlMX Fox! Kal-GardiDallas Baker Products) and Bob Buffaloe (Highland Hon support/Hi-Point Racing). Anderson claimed both the 125cc and 250cc Pro classes while Buffaloe grabbed the Open class honors. The 125cc class started things off and as the pack rounded the first . corner, Robby Watilo (R.W. Racing/ Yam of Salem), Steve Pless (Kaw) and Dave Hettinga (Yam of Salem) claimed the first three spots. Watilo rode in the lead until Tim Michlitsch (Kaw supportiDG/Bel Ray) took over at the mid-point, with Anderson following suit right behind. The two put lots of distance between themselves and the rest of the group, with Michlitsch able to hold on for the win; Anderson finished a close second. Watilo, Pless and Kawasaki support ace Kevin Jansen rounded out the top five. Moto two found Mike McCormick (Fred's Cycle City Suz) lead Anderson and Watilo around corner number one, but it wasn't long before Anderson gained the number one spot and was gone for good. Michlitsch came up from a bad start for the runner-up position while Watilo, Pless and Jansen again finished third through fifth. . The 250cc contest was Anderson's all the way. The first mota saw Watillo run a solid second the entire race, with Bob Buffaloe making a last lap charge that fell just short of Wa tilo at the checkers. Rick Bozarth (Gresham Suz) finished in the number four spot while KTM/ A-I Cycle's Rodney Kellar was fifth. In mota two Arne Hettman (Cycle World Honda/Seer) got the holeshot, . but it was again Anderson who flew by to take the lead and the.win. Michlitsch grabbed a second. Buffaloe and Scott Tyler (Maico /Huskey NW) came into the final corner with Tyler's Maico just barely ahead, but Buffaloe 'took the inside line, and forced Tyler to the ground. Tyler remounted his machine to take a frustrating fourth and Steve Smith (Cycle World Han) rode a strong race for fifth. The Open race was all Buffaloe's as he won both motos on his CR480. Lyle Schappert (Schoppert Logging/ Mai) rode to a 3-2 score for second overall, while Tyler managed a creditable third after coming from way behind. Results WEE PEE WEE: 1. Brad Brooks (Yam); 2. Percy, Reynard romp at Sunny ValleyTT By Clay Light SUNNY VALLEY, OR, AUG. 15 Greg Reynard had the hot hand in TT action at Sunny Valley Raceway today, going for a romp in the Pro Money main event and the 250cc A main. Ken Percy came up from Crescent City to do damage to the Open class. He took the Open A main. Wayne Frampton made it another double as he took both the 80 and lOOcc A mains and dashes. Many MXers were on hand to try to stop an onslaught of flat track domination. Gary Bault (Han of Roseburg/ Yam) and Clay Light (LOP Racing Super Seer/Bul) were pitted in heat one of the 250s, but could do little at stopping Reynard, who set fast pace. By the time the Trophy dashes rolled around, the track was getting into superb shape. The sun dried the once tacky surface and-it was ready to get the full treatment from the Pro money riders. Percy led off the line, but Reynard wasted very little time going around with AMA Expert Dana Hansen (Yam) giving close chase to keep them honest. By early afternoon,' the temperature rose to nearly 90 degrees and the promoters decided to keep the program running as quickly as possible so those in leathers could get changed, grab a cool one and a dip in the icy river that surrounds Sunny Valley raceway. . The first main of the day was the 250 A main event with 10 finalists on the line. Wayne Shermerhorn (C-A ) had the pole position and led off the line. Reynard, Bobby Klum (Hon) and Robbie Blagg (Simpson/Maxima/Yam) were in tow. Positions stayed the same until lap three when Annis and Klum made contact, letting Annis scurry by, but only briefly, as 'Klum took the spot back. The leaders were never more _ .. - ... - _ ...
