Eugene Suzuki rider Loch Names took the 250cc Pro ove ra ll with a 2-2 tall y, riding co n sisten tly to sna tch the overall fro m Watilo wh o went 4-1. Ben Grable took the win in th e small Open P ro class with a 2-1 on a new 500 Husqva rna. The track looked perfect, and will host the next G old Cup ra ce J uly 25. Fir st 125cc P ro mota ha d Steve Pl ess (Fred' s Cycl e City Suz ) ta ke the holeshot over Steve Corcoran (Vancou ver Yam ), Watil o (R W Racing /Scott USA/Yam su pport), Ca na dian All an Dyk e (H a n ) and Mike McC ormick (Fred' s Cycle City/ Sup er Seer Suz ). The order rem a in ed the same a t th e end of a lap; bu t at the half it wen t Watilo and Co rco ran fig hting fo r th e lead and Dyke trailing in th ird followed by David H etti nga (R W Racing/Steve's Yam ) and ea rly leader Pl ess. McCo rm ick 's ride ca me to an end when the former Orego n State champ went off the trac k and wrapped a hundred feet of banner in h is rea r wheel , causing him to slow. Up fron t Watilo moved away fro m Co rcoran , who began to fade allowing Dyke to ch a ll en ge wi th a lap to go. Pl ess rode in sale possessio n of fourth, a spot which he wo ul d take to the fla g behind Watilo , Corcoran and Dyk e. Watilo, Dyke, Clarence Gard ner (Cycle Country Han), Corcoran and Pless led off th e seco nd mota. Watilo pulled away on the fir st lap as Dyk e held second, and Kevin Jansen (Kaw USA /Beaverton Hon/ Ka w) wo rked through he avy first lap traffic to push Dyke. Jansen eventually got the drive on the determined Canadia n and made a spectacular p ass to ta ke second and close in on Watilo , which h e did at three seconds a lap. Wa tilo took th e win by half a bikeleng th with Jansen second and McCorm ick third . Loch Names nai led down the.start of the first 250cc P ro m o ta while 16 riders got to see one view of th e southern O regon rider. H ettinga and R ick Boza rth (Gresham Suz) ga ve early chase, bu t it was J a n sen again coming on strong aft er a lap of ca tch-up. Janse n got by Names after a four-lap battle to ta ke over the lead, which was never more than 10 feet th e whole mota. Dyke and Jon Buyas (Buyas Meat Packing Su z) he ld down th ird and fourth , but Bu yas slo wed, letting Watilo move into his vaca ted spot. Jansen held o ff Names to take th e win. Third went to Dyke foll o wed by Watilo, Bu yas, Boza rth and Skeet Hise (DG / Eas tside Kaw). Mota two wen t Watilo 's wa y fro m start to finish . All Names ne eded was to finish second and the overall would be his . Watil o kicked in an afterburner and quickly sped aw ay from Names and Ja nsen , wh o entered th e picture and a lso was looking fo r th e overall win but would first have to get around pesty Names. Jansen DNF at the half, wh ich let Bu yas mo ve to third, but he too wou ld fall prey to . the DNF grem lins and drop o u t, letting Bozart h , Vincent Wa rren (Ya mhill Yam) and Dyke in to a m ad clash for third pl ace cash. Yamaha-moun ted Steve Corcoran and Su zuk i ace Randy Crisman took the ir first overa ll wins th is season in the 125 and 250cc Pro classes, respectively. Corcoran, who has just returned fro m a leng th y layoff from racing, shook off the cobwebs and ran to an impressive first rn oto win after a holeshot. H e never looked ba ck, ru n ning a ll nine la ps out front. The real race, was fo r the next four spots. Suzuki riders J ess Dirks, T ed Holt, Ra lph Dunlap a nd Chuck Ensrud were all runn ing in the sam e pa ck the entire race , but Dirks rode h is best race o f the year to fin ish second with D & S Cycles ride r H olt third . Dun la p and En srud, both new to PIR, were fourth a nd fifth . The seco nd mot a found H o lt ta king th e holeshot with Ens ru d a nd Corcoran in to w. H e wo n the first moto a head of Eugen e Suzuki 's Mark Freese a n d Po wer Master Su zu ki ri der J ohn Woodley, but in the second had to settle for the runner-u p spot beh ind Woodley who turned up th e power a nd flew to a n impressive seco n d moto win. Crisman was second and first o verall , and Freese fin ish ed third. Kaw asaki rider Mark Sch o nberg won th e Mini Junior class, ta kin g both moto wins but not wi thou t being hounded in ea ch m oto by Shawn Shevel and Mike Bell , both on Yamahas. Bell finished second behind Schonberg the first moto, bu t moto two saw Sh evel turning on th e afterburners to take second and seco nd overa ll. Bell was third and also third o vera ll.
