Fog season at " W et-wood" RR By Alice Macph.erson WESTWOOD, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA, JUNE 27 While it is perfectly normal at "Wet-wood" to race in the pouring, driving rain, and all the posters read, " Racing starts 38 a t noon , rain or shine," today was th e first .race in memory that has been fogged in. By I p .m ., you couldn't see the end of th e p its from the middle, and the starter looked like a fish erman in his yelllow slicker and ha l. The first 750cc Production heat was stopped miuway for lack of visiblity, and during th is and other unscheduled breaks the riders huddled in their vans or searched the ar ea for better rain tires and non-fog compounds. . When the riders were actually out competing, slow was the operative word with lap tim es double wha t they were in normal weather. Bill Matty insisted that it was clear enough to run the last leg of 550cc Cafe, so off they crept with Mat ty in the lead. Fraser Mitchell in second was not worried about horsepower; he was too busy tr ying to remember which wa y the track turned . Daryl Husse- rolled on and out of sight into the soup to clean 410cc Production with Ted Russo and Ken Stobbart far behind in second and third. L ynne La cey made a smooth move on Stobbart tow ards the end and had third place sewn up until the sight of th e chec kered flag on the last lap mo ved her throttle hand too much , and she ended up off th e track co ming out of the last corn er. Junction Cit y " opener By Clay Light JUNCTION CITY, OR, JULY 10 After a few years of rest, Benton-- came up reading like a who' s wh o of so u th ern Oregon racin g . Barry Pel- " key (Megacycle Cams/Simpson/Yam Sports Cen ter ) pounded the 250cc Pro main event while Rich Word (R &B Racing Suz ) took the Open A m ain. John Wincewicz (Powroll/ Messler Racing/American Hon) made a triumphant return to ac tion , winning the Open Pro main even t. The tra ck is longer tha n a short track but much smaller than a half mile, so call it what you want; the racing was spectacular. Brief heats had Wincewicz and Pel key fight it out in the first Open Pro heal. Wincewi cz wasn' t to be denied the winand th e pole position. Heat two had AMA Junior David Whiting (D&V Yam) lead only to be swooped by Word; both transfered. Semis put Gary Da vis (D&V Yam) into the Open Pro main after troubles with his Triumph, but that was after a baule from Tony Overman (Yam) and Ryan Fisher (O u t Front No. Plates/Vern's Air Sales/Garner Yam). The 125cc A main had southern Oregon speedster Robbie Blagg watching from the sidelines; after winning his heat, his machine DNF, giving David Woolard (Suzof Grants Pass) an opportunity at victory. Rod Bix el (Suz) and Charlie Mitchell (H arry Lillie/Shoei Yam ) tried to keep him in sight, but the determined rider gets beuer with time , like fine wine, and opened up a huge margin over Bixel , who was beginning to _fade. Woolard took the win , and Bixel was second followed closely by Mitchell. The L ightweight Money main looked nearly identical as Woolard put his 125 into the lead. Bixel went to th e outside in an attempt to take it away, but the plan backfired, and Woolard wasted the pack once again to win over Mitchell, who got around Bix el and Garth Mulkey (Bu l 200). Mitch ell came back to briefly lead the 250cc A main over Loesch and Bob Ingle (Ya m). Tom McCallum (Yam) moved in to second and challenged Loesch for the lead, which Loesch was bound and determined to claim. Ingle ran a strong third, hounded by Blagg (Maxima/Simpson/Carpet City Yam ) who m oved to fourth, but th at was as far as the 14-year-old wou ld get. Loesch won . The Open A m ai n saw Word, Whi ting an d Chuck G lender (Yam of Salem H on ) in the lead. Word went immedia tely to another of h is huge leads wh ile Whi ting and Glender trailed, som e distance behind the AMA Expert who went on to win. The 250cc Pro main had a tworow, eight-rider field revving and waiting to be let loose. Loesch dropped the hammer to head the pack while Scott Annis (Yam Sports Center/Ron Annis/Buffaloe No. PlatesKaw) and Pelkey gave immediate chase. Annis dropped it , leuing Pelkey move up to challenge Loesch for the lead. Pelkey got by to leave the fighting to Loesch, Fisher and Davis (Hon). Davis worked by Fisher and moved into contention with Loesch on the last lap but couldn 't get by, and the order read Pelkey, Loesch, Dav is, Fisher and Jeff Harsha (Da ta Control/HuffmanWright Logging Yam ). Word and Wincewicz led a nine finalist pack of Open Pros when the green light appeared. Pelkey and Whiting followed suit by making a close foursome. Wincewicz rode the high line to take the lead away from Word while Pelkey put pressure on Word and made his move to garner second place. Wincewicz, riding with a broken leg , rode like a National contender, opening a lead up on Pelkey and Word while Whiting and Davis (Yam ) argued < ver fourth, o which Davis took on the last lap.
