II , 1973 - What started out as a nice little fami ly enduro turned out to b e a full -scale endurance test, as the weather really came down hard on th e participants of th e second Granny Run. You had to be there to beli eve it. If started out sunny but windy then rained, hailed and snowed, turning th e desert .whit e and blowing everyone's mind! The first loop was a nice layout, as th e Pomona Vall ey Desert Riders did their homework and struck a good the co m p ro m ise betwe en women and kids and the better riders. What th ey did was layout a fairl y easy , rid able course that the kids could handle and then kicked the speeds up for th e better riders. Realizing that the women and ~ids will ride at the ir own pa ce an yway , It worked out well. The only thing that wen t wrong was the rain and hail that poured down. It did make things a little slippery in sp ots and a t tim es completely wip ed ou t any vision. The hail really stung th e cheeks, slowing down most riders. As th e sec on d loop was optional for women and kids (More and more famil y enduros are following this format. ) onl y the brave (?) started ', out and most thought they wer e crazy (we were too!), as the sn ow had started to fall by this time . The second loop was more rugged than the first, a n d th e snow comp o un ded the riding. T he co urse st arted out up a series of hill s and as we started up (We were riding number 5 0.) a number o f riders were co m in g back. That rather had us loo king at each Mu mble, m um bte, b urr , shiver , muzzle m umble.
