Cl BLM Meets with San Jose Bikers . " C> The Real Widowmaker SAN JOSE, CAL., Feb. 26, 1973 - Two members of the Bureau of Land Management met with the public in San Jose tonight to discuss .t h e implementation of off-road regulations on BLM lands and were met with a ' b arrage of land use questions the entire evening. Little , if any, word of the imp~nding meeting was directed to the public and it was only through the effort of a few concerned that nearly 500 people turned out. One man had received a letter in reply to some questions that he had on BLM properties and the man was directed to attend the mee tin g. He in turned called Gene Miller, owner of Trophy Cycles an d the word of mouth campaign got under way. Most people di d n ',t hear of the meeting until after 3 P.M . but 7:30 P.M . showed a full house. While the directors tried to keep the night's a.ctivities to the regulations pe nding, the inevitab le q ue ation of P anoche Hills use d o mina ted the conservation. Mem bers of the Los G atos an d Mt, View Motorcycle Clubs, as well as many inde pende n ts, wan te d to have mo re information o n what land was open but we re told to write to the district office. T he disc ussion of the actual regulations was short with most questions being on the man in the field's ability to close down areas and redesignate others. The public did not "- by Terry Newfarmer SALT LA KE C ITY, UTAH - The now nationally-famous name ' of "Widowmaker Hillclimb" b an object of dispute. Perhaps this explanation will clear up some of the confusion. The first even t being billed as Widowmaker is the annual hillclirnb by the Bees Motorcycle Club, the club that has put on Widowmaker Hillclimbs for ten years. This will be held March 25 on the same ridge but farther west from the old hill. The new course is 1,500 feet high' and never climbed. A JliIlclim b being b illed as the "original" Widowmaker Hillclimb is scheduled for April 6 o n the old hill, by a new corporation registered with the state as the Widowmaker Corp., of which Terry Larsen, former president of the Bees, is the president. 'u k e t his one man rule and the comments were to be forwarded to Washington for further discussion and implementation. _ The rest of the nigh t was spent with the usual bickerings between users and many questions were left unanswered as to the use and availability of BLM lands and accesses, It would behoove the BLM to have more of these meetin gs as the public is very misinformed on what is ac ural ly goi ng on . O ne lo ng d iscussion centered around the use of the green stickie that is required on state land . T he BLM reps did n o t know if that were to be required on their properties but they did express clearly that federal land is not under the jurisdiction of the state. It seems that Larsen was president of the Bees when he regis tered the nam e , something the club never did, but he reg istered it for the new corporation, n o t for the o ld club. Widowmaker Corp. requires CMC me mbership, w hile t he Bees are part of t he Utah Sportsman Riders Association, which has ma de AMA m em b ership optional, u nless the sponsoring club requires it, which the Bees do not. So those are the "Widowmakers." · Take your pick. , ... M Cl by Bill Spencer Ken Roberts and Mark Brelsford are going t o be o ut for awhile it appears. Roberts will most likely enter the hospital fo r a groin injury suffered in late February while running a marathon that he won b y seven laps. He should be OK b y the Dallas road race. Not so lucky for the No.1 guy who may be out somewhat longer after a weeks stay in Florida an d .th en so me time in LA before coming home to Northern Calif. * * * * * * District 36 Road Riders have evidently split fro m the AMA. At a regular m ee tin g in Sacramento, Mar. 10, it w as d eci ded that they would not check AMA cards at their events and it was rumo ured that Commissioner Elmer Hansen would resign from his post. A ll this BLM talking isn't getting info d o wn t o th e p ublic. The sche duled me e tin g in San J ose a few weeks back was n' t publiciz ed except for one letter sent to a man discussing the land use ques ti o n. He got the letter the morning o f th e me e ti n g and called his local dealer , Gene Miller of Trophy Cycles , who got the telephone game going so that by 7:30 that night, the BLM reps were surprised to see over 400 people in attendance.
