By Strawberry Enterprises Terry Pra tt Story Volney Howard Photos HOLlCE, CZECHOSLOVAKIA, May Vladimir Kavinov, a 14, 1972 19-year-old Russian riding a wo rks CZ, interrupted Suzuki's domination of 250cc Grand Prix Motocross here todav with a hard fough win in the Czechoslovakian World Championship round. Crashing heavily in the opening laps of the first heat, the case hardened Russian broke off his fron t fender, half of the expansion ch am ber and he lost several positions. When the initial shuffling was over Kavin ov, lay in the middle of the pack behind about 15 of the wo rld 's toughest 250 riders including Miroslav Hal m, the local Czech favorite who led for a Iew laps before he oversl id entering a tum and loaded up his engine. World Champion J od Robert took command of the race at that point and after a couple of laps he had buil t up his customary 20 second lead. Joel was co olly tooling around the tacky and super-bumpy three mile circuit but Kavinov was slamming across the b umps landing sideways, front wheel first - whatever was fast est. With his broken exhaust pipe bellowing he made quick work of the also rans and then blew past some of the top names in the field. Arnie Kring, Alexei Kibirine and Miroslav Halm all fell under his wheels and then Kavinov caugh t and passed Husky rider Uno Palm and Yamaha rider Hakan CIILLII~IIS CUP IIDDDR MOTOBCYCLI IICI Andersson who were havi ng a heroic wheel to wheel battle for second place. The stocky youngster closed to within 10 seconds of Joel before the Suzuki pit crew got out the go-fast sign an d J oel gassed it to win the fi rst round by 15 seconds. Joel also led the second heat, but this time Kavinov \...as rubbing knohhies with him from the first tum . For four laps they raced just seconds ap art while the rest of the forty rider field trailed by hundreds of yards. Then in a turn at the bottom of a bumpy downhill Jocl's wheels slip ped o ut of the groove and the Russian to o k over the lead when J oel spun out and fell over. Robert was up and away like a sho t but the crash had be nt the Suzuki's ...after the frame geomet ry was altered on the course.
