Right after Greg Higgins took over first position, he endoed, leaving Mike David all alone to take the win. In the second mota Higgin s, Greer, and David were all put out with mechanical problems leavins way for new leaders, Bob Haroth (Yam) and Intermediate, Bret Yagar (Bul). Greg Higgins won the last mota and Haroth was second. This gave Haroth enough points to win overall. Once Joe got by he opened the gap up so wide that he could have stopped for coffee and still won. The Open class was the Junior highlight. Chuck Czerwinski looked like an advance guard for some sort of Maico invasion. After only three weeks since major surgery Chuck tried his luck at racing again. He won the first mota, but due to cross-ups, wheelies, and other assorted European goodies he ended up fourth . Jeff Davidson and Mark Asbill, both living close to Modesto, have nearly dominated every race in the past month, and with youth very much on their side and a great assist from both fathers, these two should be right at the top of the twenty high point Experts. In the 250 Expert bash, it was Asbill to the front after many false starts. Asbill takes after current No. 1 man, Jim Foley in his starts. He is, usually about ten feet out in front of the pack. T hat occurred again today with Asbill jetting to the lead and Davidson having to work from the back. Asbill held a good lead for the firs t six of ten laps, b u t Davi dson caught up. With the wide groove and deep ru ts, p assin g was tricky. While the Hodaka h eld its own for most of the time, the Yamaha had it much smoother and took th e checkered in smart fashion . His very well tuned BSA 500 :\IX ~ held the lead for the distance with super w slider Mike VanLienden (Man) taking the second spot. ~ The forty inch Experts had a strange bedfellow in the form of one Paul Leuty and a 501 Maico. On the regular smooth track, the Maico wouldn't have stood a chance against the 650's with the trick engines and frames, but today it shined. Leuty had absolutely no trouble laying it on the big boys and made it look good. In a few months, he will most likely put it away for his regular 40-inch Triumph.
