~One ~ w Z W ...J (J >(J unhap'py soul is nigh onto By Bill Spencer FREMONT , CAL., Mar ch 18, 1972 Once again the m igh ty members of the Fre mo nt Mara t hon mo b co nverged to demo nstrate that cow trailing fo r trophies can be fun , although at least one p arent went home unhapp y. The likes of a sporting event such as a Marathon on Saturday was des igned to give non-racing motorcycle riders, as well as regular racers, a chance to do their thing on a simulated rough track and have fun while doing it. The problem arising from such activities ar e small and seem to come from the more serious intended. Fo r those active racers, this sport was not intended. 1t is more like a p icnic and fun ride than a race and those that want to make it more than that shouldn't come. The multitude of riders shows that the idea is good but when the hassles become more apparent than t he go od times, the racing ceases to be, entirely . For the 152 bikes that rode the one mile track, only having one unhappy soul is nigh onto miracu lo us. The gu ys that seem to win all the time are still doing that b ut there always seems to be at least one or two newcomers that ha ve never ridden a ra ce before. These guys are easy to tell as they h ave pie plate letters instead of regular numb ers, although there are some unrated riders th at ride with some of the Experts, but they don't seem to get in much rid ing b ecause th e Experts dominate th e actual race and trying to flag one in when he is reall y doing battle with another Expert is like try ing to tell Dick Mann that he is too old to race; no wa y. The 250 class was off first and after two rigoro us ho urs of mudhole and dust, th e team of Turner(Turner cam e out victorious. T hey had received one trophy so me weeks back and were once again in the thick of it from first lap to last. Their Selby Rickman Montesa led Larry Darr to the checkered an d altho ugh Darr's application of riding was different, his seco nd was well done. Darr's regular p artner didn ' t make the scene an d so to give Larry a breather, other bodies h ad to be sc outed o ut to ride. About eight laps from the en d, Huffman experienced gearbox difficulties and was out. At this point the Simas/Morrell bike droppe d back a few places and Roger Lollar and Dan Austin took over the lead only to not come around for the final lap and drop to third spot.
