J im Kapl an , a dese rt novice, led at the bomb and p roceed ed to open h is lead o n each o f the three nine-m ile laps to co me across t he finis h line with a resp ectabl e lead. J . Van DiIlen wa s second Open class an d F. Christ ian was third. It mu st h ave been Husky day as all of th e Open class winners were Husky-mo unted. The 125 class was once agai n dominated by Mon t e Lee on h is hot Ya maha while finis hing second overall. The mo st amazing rid e of the day was turned in by Doug Winchell, riding a 100 Bultaco , in th e 125 class. Would you b elieve Do ug was last at th e bo mb? After so me spectacular riding , h e finished second 125 and fourth overall. Third was steady-riding K. Reece o n his Penton. The trail class, which are all novices, had Jim Eveland leading from wire to wire on his Hodaka . Dave Hart was second also o n a Hodaka an d V. Morris Jr., the 400 Suzu ki drawing winner, was third on a Rickma n. Sunday was wi ndless and wa rmer as if me weatherman had heard there was some big desert names coming to the Po nderosa, due to the District 37 Open Sunday policy. The b ig b ikes took off with young Mark McDonald leading at the smokebomb and t he entire first lap on his Kawa saki, Wiley old Art Knapp on his Husky let the you ng charger show h im the way around, then took the lead on the second lap and h eld it to the end. Mark was a very close second. J ac k Kn ebel anothe r desert n am e , did a endo and stil l finished third on h is C Z. Monte Lee did it again in the 125 class o n his Pop Lee tuned Yamaha. Mike Joh nsto n was second on a Harley and Doug Winchell was a close third. The trailbike race gave Dave Hart a first place on his Hodaka. Comb in ed with Dave's seco nd place on Saturday he had enough points to win the McHal Apollo h elm et. V. Morris, J r. was second on a Ric kman and L. Caldwell was t hird on his Bultaco, There was a gru dge race in the trailbike class as two Ifl-year-old cousins on identical Yamaha .90 s were going to prove who the better racer was . Dan Webb proved to be just a little faster than S teve Webb. Dan also trophied and Steve missed the las t trailbike trophy by less than one minute.
