This tfm e it's Larry Bergquist --and yet another naDle is added t o District 37's list of overall winners By Dick Wright LUCERNE , CAL., Feb. 13, 1972 Nine hundred and sixty-two Hounds were out today to do battle under the bright sun of the California desert. Larry Bergquist pulled into the winner's circle after the rough two hour and twenty minute race and called it "one of the roughest races I have ever ridden. We all had to push up the steep hills in the first loop, and the second loop had some real bad deep sand. Man, I am tired. tt After the drop of the banner the riders headed out on the first loop of about 43 miles. The leader at the smoke bomb or yellow truck was Art Knapp, of the So. Cal. M.C. on a Tracy Aus ky . The first lo op took about 50 minu tes, which is abo ut right fo r m ost of the gas tanks that everyone is running. Kn app led it thro ugh the pits, fo llowed by Larry Pfutzenreuter on a 250 Bultaco , Bill Friant on a 1 75cc Puch, then came Berquist. The Desert M.C. said the last loop was a long one and it was. After an hour and 15 minutes you could see two riders coming across the fiat open space about 10 miles out. It looked like they were reall y battling it out at speed. Then they head up into the hill and came out at the top and picked up a check and headed for the finish line. After an hour and 25 minutes o n the second loop it was Berg quist in for the win followed by Mike Patrick o n a 360 Ya maha. Knapp had ran out of gas and finished way back. Also, Pfutzenreuter had run into some problem and dropped out. Hoyt Statham was the next rider in on his Husky, right behind him came Mitch Mayes on a 125cc Harley-Davidson. Dean Goldsmith, his tuner, was really happy to see him, saying "we really have the right combination in that bike now. What a ride." Steve Holliday was next followed by motocrosser Jim Fishback on a C.Z. Then cam Bill Friant to first 175 on a Puch. George Eggleston took first Amateur on a 250 Bultaco and Bob Johnson was first 500 Amateur on a Husky. Gene Dempsey took first Heavyweight o n a Triumph and Jerry Standefer was second on a good handling Rickman. Larry Roese1er was the first 100 rid er in on his little Baja. Rick Jensen was the first 12 5cc Amateur in, and Mike Cartledge was t he first 100cc Amate ur in on a Hodaka. After the race a lo t of the finishe rs had to go back o ut to take gas to th eir b uddies. It loo ks like we are going to have to ge t bigger tanks or shorter ru ns.
