NEIRA E nduro C hampionship Series Round 4: Somers Run E nduro Nett. 'Nuff Said. B y J OE M cLA U GHLIN SOMERS, CT, JUNE II I n his quest to defend his 1999 Series Ch ampio nship , KTM/Moose/ Razee /To r c o -sp o n so r ed H a n s Neff has consistently fin ished in th e t o p thr e e t hroughou t t he fir s t t hree ro u nds . At r o un d four , Neff f inally nailed dow n a perfe ct day, fini sh ing a full minute ah ea d of T ech -Tube's Bob White and KTM 's Peter T anner after a cl ose -fo ugh t battle for th e w in , N eff's co nsistency made th e d iff erence , as h i s six - po in t s cor e b e a t ou t th e seven -p o int ca rds of White and T an ner , wh o wer e sep ar at ed b y a m er e 10 sec onds . Uns e as onably war m a nd humid weather was o n tap for the 2 000 version of th e Somers Run En duro. The Connectic ut Ra mbl ers dec ided t o m ove the key ti m e up b y an hour, t o 8 a.m ., so eve ryone co uld head over t o th e Sout hw i c k , Ma s sa chus etts , Na ti on al MX, and also to get th in gs going before it got too hot. In years past, th e Ram bl ers start ed th eir ru n w ith a free -te rrito ry ri de t o the start con trol in t h e wo od s, Th is yea r, th e even t started right fro m the fa irgrounds , wit h just ov er three m il es of tar to th e first woods section . Mor e than a fe w un susp ecting sou ls wer e c aug ht heading in a little hot , but m ost we re sma rt eno ug h to realiz e t he cl ub w as up to something her e . The fir st sec ti o n was a good mix of fast, open , rocky tr ail m ixed in with som e ti ghte r stuff. This led to th e gra ss-tra ck sec tion , which weaved in and out of the woods th rough a field of tall grass. Bob Wh ite roosted his way through th e section fa st est ( 2:34). followed by T an ner ( 2 :4 6) an d Neff ( 2 :5 5). T h e follo wing section was a bit lo ng er bu t m ostl y wi d e o pe n , with a few jagged rock s to kee p every one o n th eir to es. N e ff set th e p a c e h e r e ( 2 :0 8) a n d earne d th e one -po int lead t hat would m ak e th e di fferen c e. C -Cycle' s J aso n Cayer (2: 59) ca me th ro ugh next, fo l lo w ed by W h it e ( 3 : 13 ) and T an n er (3 : 17) . T he officia l gas stop gave every one a quick rest before headi ng out to a short, no nt imed section .
