Welty proved that he ca n ada pt to extreme co nditions quite well, as he pull ed out a health y lead on the rest of the fie ld . Mea nw hile, Mc Clintock m ade his best attempt at m o v in g th ro ug h a w il d fie ld of A mateurs and Experts, ca using one heck of a sand storm. At the fi nish, Welty too k the fi rstmoto win , and McClintock was a d ist ant secon d to the rookie sand rider. On th e seco nd lap, Bickne ll had to deal wi th some q uicksand , as well as so m eon e's k nobby ti re. After all the co m m otion, Bic k ne ll was ab le to re mount , and he st art ed a c h arge that would tak e him all the way to Gro ss' rear fender on the last lap, when lapp ed riders be came a fac to r. Gros s took the fi r st-mot a w in ha ndily . w it h B ic k ne ll in t ow . Juan Saffon rou nd ed out t he top three. At the start of th e seco nd m ota, Welt y wa s at the fron t, w ith Mc Cli nt ock in secon d. The two rid ers q uic k ly pull ed ou t a c om m and ing lead fro m th e rest o f the pa ck . At that point, Welty was ri ding lik e a man po ssessed . and he c aught McClintock sooner th an the vetera n expected.
