The 250cc B class was the first to test th e wat ers. Tim Ball entin e want ed to save his tearoffs more than th e rest of the riders did , so he led th e pack through gravel pudding that m ade up turn one. The six · pac k of Jas on Bak er, Tim Ross, Sco tt Zielin ski, Brian Schuitema n, Edd ie Karban and J ason Dam were desperately fan· ning out, loo kin g fo r roos t· free lin es to m ake a run at Ball entin e' s ever- wide ning lead. Ball en· tine lost his front end , the lead, and his clea r lin e of vision in on e fell swoop when he went down in the fast left· hand sweeper before lap two was over. Ball entin e rejoined the race at th e wr ong e nd of th e lead pack, whose new leader was now Bak er .
