At Ezell Spo rts Prom oti on 's Apex Valley Raceway in Whit e Plains, Kentu ck y, Bank s and Metca lf went at each other in the 125cc A and 250cc A classes as if o ne of th em had stolen some " sugar" from th e othe r's girl friend . In both 250cc A m otos, Metca lf and Bank s wer e engaged in a down -and -ou t , d og -eat dog , Kentuck y -cl ay -slin gin ' slugfe st. Wh en the fur settl ed and the cro wd walk ed away fro m the fence , Metca lf had tak en th e win in both m otos and the ov erall to p podium spot . Risking getting he 'd gon e down , Metc alf upri ghted his stuck in th e mu ck didn 't sto p hun dreds of rid- m a chine and beg an to slice, dice a nd lntimi- ers from lining up be hind th e st arti ng ga tes in date hi s way up back th rou gh th e pack . By the g reen-and-white, Metcalf had put all but Smith and Banks behind him. and he was grittin ' and hopes of gelling that cle an holeshot . Saturday geari n' around the elqht -te nths -mlle circuit. Before the midway lap was ove r, Metcalf had put Smith behind him and kicked in his a fte rbu rners to make up th e five or six se c o nd s still separat ing his Suzuki and Bank's Honda . Like a dev il flying to o cl ose to th e ground, Metcalf kept hi s m ach ine wound ti ght and his rear knobby in co nt act with Moth er Earth in his drive to ove rcome Ba nk 's le a d . When the white flag unfu rled for th e last lap, M etc alf was within a couple o f bik e lengths of Banks and pressing ha rd . Down the p it-line straight awa y , M et c alf bo b b led on a slight curve but lo st no ti me. Both riders kept their ma chi nes low and fl o wi ng , makin g sing les out of doubles and tr ip les. As they ente red the Magic Forest for the fin al ti me. th e bu zz alon g the crowded fenc e wa s abou t which one wo uld co m e out fir st . It was Banks - with Metcalf right beside him . Over a double , side by side, th ey mirrored each oth er. Up th e uphill, with Ken tucky cl ay fl yi ng , Ban k s and Metcalf came ar ound the co rne r tow ard th e checkers in a dead heat. On Su nday, Fox Racing supplied more than a hu ndr ed riders with new apparel, and practice was k iller! Then th e rain started falling and things got soupy . Some riders were qu ite impressive, while many o th ers were chall enged to j ust finish a lap!
