Riding his 50 1 Husaber g FE, Grizzle foug ht off KTM 200 pilot Tommy Veat o r. Both rid e rs d ro pp ed nine po ints, with Gr izzle gett ing th e nod on tie breake rs . This ra ce was a lso sa nc tioned by the Flo rida Tr ail Riders , a nd Ve a tor , Ma senc up a nd curren t FT R cha m p Brewer a re in a close fight for tha t c ha m p ions hip. Th e Rive r City Dirt Riders lov e to mi x th in g s u p , a nd 85 t ra il miles , heat, d us t, a nd tigh t , new trail m ad e for a difficu lt a nd c ha lleng ing enduro . Twelve c heckpoi nts were used; some were placed to c atc h riders who rode hot. He ld in the Oceola Nationa l Fo rest, a bo ut 40 mil e s f rom Jack s o n vi lle, t he t erra in inclu des san d , wh o op s a nd pa lm etto s . T he re wa s ple nty of tig ht, twisty tra il a nd a good bit of ne w; unc ut stuff, a s well as je ep roa ds an d s ingle -track . T he ra ce starte d at th e park , the site o f a fa mo us civil wa r battle - hence the race's name . Rig ht from the s ta rt, ride rs we nt into the woo ds . A tricky bit of check plac em ent c a u ght a fe w hot riders. Brew e r a nd Ed mo nd so n bot h collected two hot points. Ano th er c heck follow ed , whi ch was ze roed b y a ll t he AAs with the exception of Edm ond- M son , who burn ed it by a minute , costing him a no t he r two . Th e c heck-out ca m e a t th e 12- m ile mark. It was a goo d, tough warm up sec tion. Grizzle , Vea to r, Ma s e nc up a nd Bre we r eac h dropped t h r e e p oint s; E d m o n s on dropped four. Afte r a brief res et , it wa s on to s e ction two , a 7 -m ile r that wa s a little eas ier a nd faster than the first . All the AAs staye d on t ime . T he last sectio n of tr a il befor e the gas was a lon g 10 mi les . It wa s fa st an d o p e n in places , wit h scattered b its o f o vergrown trai l. Onc e aga in the AAs stayed on tim e . By th e looks of most ride rs at the gas, th e heat a nd d ust were tak ing a to ll. A reset wa s followed by a check severa l m ile s int o the woods , whi ch reall y made th e rid e rs wat ch th e clo ck. The section wa s 10 miles lon g , with a bout s ix of th ose timed. All the AAs dr opped two each. Ther e wa s no res et after th e c he ck; just m iles o f tra il a nd the n a no ther check. Veator was o n th e gas for th e fa st time , ma nag ing to ze ro the c hec k wh ile the ot h e rs a ll d ro ppe d o n e. Onc e aga in , th ere wa s no reset. T he next c hec k was s ix m ile s la te r, rig ht befor e the second ga s stop. All th e AAs dropped two p oi nt s . Th is lo ng series of se c tions c aused a fe w p roblems. "I lost m y computer right after th e ga s," s a id Veator. "I was on th e row with Mike Shank [a fast S uper Senior A rider] a nd I was abl e to keep time off him . Luckily, I was able to fix it at th e sec on d ga s st op ." Grizzle had a few probl ems as we ll. "I los t m y rear br ak e s ," he repo rted. "T he y bo iled ove r a nd t h a t was that. My g rea t p it c re w [h is wif e , Val erie] helpedrne b le ed the m at gas number two a nd I was a ble to conti nue ." Veator wa s ah e a d by a po int a t th e second gas. There were fou r chec ks left covering 34 miles , with the fina l check a k n o wn c ontro l at 11 2 miles . The c he ck -i n a t 8 2 mile s wa s a n easy ze ro . A G Y G I e A cold , ove rc ast morning g reete d th e rid ers as they lin e d u p fo r the eve nt. Th e first sectio n took the ride rs out to the woods b y way of Bro wn Bridge Road . At 3 .2 mile s , everyo ne took a left turn a n d the fun began. Warren Hills and the Tw in Ba y T rail Ride rs a lways se em to find lots of new "e ve nt-o n ly" trail , a nd this ye ar was no d ifferen t. Whi le we ll-mark ed , th e course did not ha ve a ny tra il to follow in m an y p la ces . Ea rly numbers did not necessa rily resu lt in low scores. T h e route to c he c k two was t he easiest of a ll th e sectio ns . T all tre es p lu s o pe n t e rr a in e q ualed hi gh e r speeds . We gn er zipped th rough th is section , grabbing the e arly lead with a score of one . Len ny Kee n was just as q uick o n his KTM to tie for th e lead. Lohman , Flegel, Willey a nd Calkins all carded twos in th is section to keep th e fron t- running p a ir in si g ht. A s h o rt reset p ut the fast boys ba ck on time, wh ile the B and C riders found th ems elves ridin g th rough the re set to try t o stay o n tim e - a s it ua ti o n that wo uld repe at itself later in the race.
